LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A group of up to 25 Meyzeek Middle School students will soon learn how discoveries in science and engineering are helping humans explore far beyond Earth.
Time Warner Cable has provided a gift to the University of Louisville’s Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium to fund a space engineering boot camp at the middle school Feb. 2 to March 3. UofL is partnering with the Bates Community Development Corp. to plan and organize the camp. BCDC runs an after-school program at Meyzeek that offers enrichment opportunities and homework assistance.
UofL planetarium educator Mark Duckwall has created a curriculum designed to engage students with hands-on activities that follow a theme of space travel and exploration. Projects include designing and testing rockets that carry a payload, constructing a lander that opens upon impact and building a rover that can navigate an obstacle course after landing.
“This camp gives students a chance to be creative, to learn by trial and error and to experience, firsthand, the engineering process for space applications.” Duckwall said.
Connect a Million Minds is a philanthropic initiative launched by Time Warner Cable to encourage more students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
