    Basketball player Wade Houston was the student representative during the Crawford Gym groundbreaking ceremony in 1963. He later went on to serve as an assistant coach under Denny Crum at UofL for 13 years before being named head coach of the University of Tennessee in 1989.

    1.) Warnock, Brook streets renamed on Belknap Campus

    Two major roads serving Belknap Campus have new names. Warnock Avenue, which runs from Brook Street to Crittenden Drive, has been renamed University Boulevard. Signs have been installed to mark the change. Brook Street from Old Eastern Parkway South to Third Street has been renamed Brook Street Connector. Those signs are on order.

    2.) Speed School Brown Forman Engineering Academy graduation

    August 4

    Speed School is graduating its first class of Brown-Forman Engineering Academy students on Aug. 4. The academy is a two-week residential program designed to assist in transitional prep of underrepresented populations in Engineering. The program has 23 incoming freshmen focused on calculus prep. This is the first year that Speed School offered a prep program designed to assist with retention and graduation of Engineering students.

    3.) TRIO Student Support Services Flood Relief Fundraiser now underway

    TRIO Student Support Services has partnered with the American Red Cross for a community service fundraiser to benefit victims of the summer flooding in West Virginia. Please consider making a donation.

    4.) Fostering Research Collaboration: A SOM Women Faculty Networking Breakfast

    Aug. 9, 7-8:30 a.m., Abell Administration Center, Room 110; Free

    UofL School of Medicine women faculty interested in doing or already doing research will have an opportunity to meet other UofL School of Medicine women faculty researchers and find potential collaborators, discuss barriers to building a research program, and to explore ways to support each other as researchers. A free breakfast will be provided for registrants. This event, sponsored by LWIMS, is for SOM women faculty only.

    5.) Floyd Street garage blue parking spaces moving

    Parking & Transportation Services is relocating the blue parking spaces on the first floor of the Floyd Street garage to the second floor beginning Tuesday, August 9. With the expansion of the Swain Student Activities Center, the reserve (red) parking on the north side of the Houchens Building will be permanently removed and these spaces relocated to the first floor of the Floyd Street garage.

    Thursdays through Oct. 27, rain or shine, 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., 400 block of East Gray Street

    Some items available today include: various baked goods; peaches, melons, bell peppers, tomatoes, sweet corn, squash, zucchini, beans, cucumbers, and onions; antibiotic and hormone free beef, chicken, pork, lamb, rabbit, bison, frog legs, duck, goat, and eggs; kettle corn, honey, maple syrup, jams, sauces and pickled items; and all natural soaps, lotions, bug spray, and alcohol free hand sanitizer.     8.) Dependent Verification Audit: Take action now

    The University of Louisville is in the process of conducting a Dependent Verification Audit. Employees and retirees who have dependents enrolled in health, dental, vision and/or dependent life insurance must provide supporting documentation to ensure continued coverage for their dependent(s). If you do not have dependents covered you will not have to take action.

    Time and place that works for you; Free for employees, spouses and QAs

    Take advantage of the chance to partner with a Get Healthy Now wellness coach intern who will help you work toward any health behavior change. You will meet with the coach one hour a week for eight weeks. Our interns have successfully completed a semester of intensive coach training and are closely supervised by a certified coach.

    13.) Ride Free with UofL ID on TARC’s new electric buses on Route 4 (4th Street)

    Want to get downtown or down to Iroquois Park with no money or tailpipe pollution? TARC has added six new all-electric buses to Route 4, serving Belknap campus. Like every TARC bus, the new fleet costs those with UofL ID nothing to ride. Catch one of the new buses along 4th Street every 15 minutes from 4:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. daily.

    Jessica Stumbo, MD, will present “The Adolescent Spine.” Dr. Stumbo will review common conditions that affect the adolescent spine. She will also discuss updates on adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. CME category 1 is available for both AAFP and ACCME accreditation.

    This Friday, please join us for the annual Pediatric Neurology Update featuring Thomas Moriarty, MD, PhD. Moriarty is chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Kosair Children’s Hospital and the Norton Neuroscience Institute and a Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Louisville. He will present “Neurosurgery of Abusive Head Trauma: Lessons from the Front Lines.”
