    DID YOU KNOW?

    A team of UofL students is competing for the inaugural ACC InVenture Prize this week at Georgia Tech. The UofL team, made up of students from both the College of Business and the Speed School of Engineering, came up with an electric bike with a solar charging station they call the E-bike. The 15 teams – one from each ACC school – will pitch their inventions to a panel of expert judges “Shark Tank” style, and the top team will receive $15,000.

    Pilot project grants from Helmsley Restorative Medicine Center are available for seeding of novel research to facilitate additional funding, foster new collaborative partnerships and/or support junior faculty for future extramural grant funding. We anticipate funding three pilot projects. Faculty leadership will review for consistency with the mission of the Helmsley Restorative Medicine Center and advisory board will review proposals for innovation and scientific merit.

    4.) Spots still available for Day of Service

    April 8, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    Volunteers are still needed for the 2nd Annual Day of Service. UofL allows staff members to take one day off a year to perform community service. Join us Friday at one of four sites and help UofL give back. Volunteers will be cleaning, painting, spreading mulch, etc.

    5.) Alpha Phi Omega sponsoring Red Cross Blood Drive

    Visit the Red Cross website and enter CARDNATION to schedule an appointment to donate. On the day of the Blood Drive, you can use the Red Cross’ RapidPass (available online) to review the information that is done before each donation. This is not the same as an appointment.

    6.) 2016 Celebration of Excellence in Diversity scheduled

    This event recognizes underrepresented graduate students who have completed their Master’s degree, reached Doctoral candidacy, or completed their Doctorate degree. The purpose of the event is to celebrate the academic milestones of our underrepresented graduate student population in an intimate, familial setting and to give them an opportunity to share their accomplishments with those who helped them succeed.

    8.) Launch date set for new Book-in-Common “Hidden America”

    Join us for the launch of the new Book-in-Common on April 7. This session is titled, “Lunch, Launch, & Learn,” and introduces faculty and staff to the new Book-in-Common, “Who Make This Country Work” (by Jeanne Marie Laskas).     UofL’s Kentucky Cancer Program will host a free legal clinic for cancer patients, their families and/or caregivers. Attorneys will be available to offer free help and advice on life planning documents, employee benefits during illness, and government assistance. Refreshments will be served.     12.) Discussion on ‘The People Who Shaped the Hoosier State’

    Linda C. Gugin and James E. St. Clair will discuss the book they co-edited, “Indiana’s 200 (1816-2016): The People Who Shaped the Hoosier State.” Gugin and St. Clair previously co-authored books on Senator Sherman Minton and Chief Justice Fred M. Vinson. The Carnegie is a member of A&S’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

    Publication agreements are invariably dense, full of legalese, and incredibly important contracts controlling your scholarship. They describe your long-term relationships with publishers and inevitably limit your use of your scholarship in sometimes surprising ways.     In 2005, James Salomon founded Salomon Contemporary Warehouse, a light industrial unit nestled in the woods of East Hampton. The seasonal exhibition space showed the likes of Alice Aycock, Lawrence Weiner, Donald Sultan, Billy Sullivan, and others. After five successful years in Long Island’s East End, Salomon Contemporary expanded and opened its Chelsea location at 526 West 26th Street in January 2010.

    The UofL Women’s Center Student Parent Association is sponsoring a Credit Repair Workshop designed to help you identify negative items on your credit report and details on how you can improve your credit score.     18.) Green tip: Spring cleaning reuse and recycling

    It’s spring cleaning time. Got junk? Don’t trash it. Use UofL’s recycling and reuse options. We recycle all kinds of plastic, paper, cardboard, metal and glass in our single-stream bins, and have collections for recycling batteries, e-waste, lighting, printer cartridges and chemicals. Departmental furniture, equipment & electronics should go to UofL Surplus. Donate personal clothing, office and household supplies, electronics, etc. to the UofL Free Store in Unitas on Wednesdays & Thursdays 12-2 p.m.

    19.) Garden Commons workshop and workday planned

    April 6, 2-3 p.m., Garden Commons at the Cultural Center

    Join us in UofL’s organic Garden Commons to finish preparing beds and start planting for the growing season. Staff, faculty, and students are all welcome to participate no matter what your previous level of experience. Tools, gloves, and experienced gardeners will be available.     20.) Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Science Grand Rounds

    Our Addiction Psychiatry fellow, John McCurdy, MD, PGY-6, will present, “Curing a Spiritual Affliction – The Application of LSD in the Treatment of Alcoholism.” Participants will review the history and pharmacology of LSD, learn the neurophysiology and process of a psychedelic experience, cover the evolution of psychedelic treatment for alcohol use disorders in the 1950’s and 1960’s, and consider the utility of psychedelics in the treatment of addiction today.

    Medicine Grand Rounds features Jason A. Chesney, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology and Deputy Director, Brown Cancer Center at UofL. Dr. Chesney will present “Arming the Immune System Against Cancer,” focusing on novel immunotherapeutic approaches to treat cancer, the role of immune checkpoint proteins in suppressing T cell-mediated cancer immunity, and the ability of oncolytic viruses to induce tumor immunity and regressions.
