April 29, Red Barn, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Dr. Shirley Willihnganz is stepping down as Executive Vice President and University Provost at the end of the academic year. To allow faculty, staff and students a chance to thank her for her service, we will hold a campus-wide cookout and reception for her at the Red Barn on Wednesday, April 29, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Also, we have set up a website for faculty and staff who would like to send a personal message to Dr. Willihnganz. 2.) Baseball team’s game against UK rescheduled
April 28, 6 p.m., Jim Patterson Stadium
The Louisville baseball team’s previously postponed home contest against Kentucky has been rescheduled for April 28. The Cardinals and Wildcats were originally scheduled to play in Lexington on April 28, but that game has been shifted to Louisville and it will be televised by ESPN3. The new date for the Louisville-Kentucky game in Lexington is Wednesday, May 6 at 6:30 p.m., at Cliff Hagan Stadium. The first matchup of the two-game series between the in-state foes was slated for April 8 at Jim Patterson Stadium but was postponed by heavy rain and lightning. Tickets purchased for April 8 will be honored for April 28. Additional tickets for Tuesday’s make-up game can be purchased at the Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium or by phone at 852-5151.

3.) Delphi U Online: Online course to prepare to teach online

The Delphi Center for Teaching and Learning is happy to announce the next offering of an eight week online course to prepare instructors to teach online- Delphi U Online. The summer offering of the course will launch on 6/15 and conclude on 8/9. Over the eight weeks participants will learn two primary concepts: first, what it is like to be an online learner, and second, how to effectively teach online. This course is made up of eight separate modules that are covered one week at a time.

4.) HR Workshop: Workplace Ethics
April 28, noon to 1:30 p.m., Human Resources Building – Conference Room 103A
Please join Dr. Denise Cumberland and Dr. Meera Alagaraja, assistant professors in the College of Education and Human Development, for this highly interactive and engaging workshop on Workplace Ethics. Participants will learn how to identify ethical issues in their jobs and ways to address them. One segment will deal specifically with cyber ethics and its impact on the workplace and in our culture. Interesting real-life case studies will be reviewed and discussed.

5.) RSO registration for CARDS Expo at freshman orientation

6.) Childhood obesity in African-American males 10 to less than 14 year olds

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to evaluate the effect of an investigational product on childhood obesity. African American Males from 10 to less than 14 years of age who are overweight or obese may be eligible for participation. If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he will receive the product or placebo and study related care at no cost. Compensation will be provided for time/travel.

7.) PKU study for 18 to 70 years old

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a medication in 18 to 70 year olds who have a diagnosis of PKU with a high Phe level. If the patient qualifies to take part in this research study, involvement lasts from 27 to 44 weeks with up to 15 study visits. They will receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost. Compensation available for time/travel.

8.) Type 1 diabetes mellitus study for Adolescents and Adults aged 12 to 35 years

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety of an experimental medication in 12 to 35 years olds who have recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. If the subject qualifies to take part in this research study, participation lasts up to 2 years; he/she will receive the study medication or a placebo and study-related care at no cost . 9.) Type 2 diabetes mellitus study for children and adolescents 10 to 17 years

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the metabolism, as well as safety, of a medication in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. If the child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will attend 3 clinic visits; receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost. Compensation available for time/travel.

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.

11.) Research study for nausea and vomiting after a scheduled surgery, birth through 17 years

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting. Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation. Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.

13.) Pediatric pain study, 7 through 16 years

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain. Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation. Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study.

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to assess the efficacy and safety of an investigational drug used to treat constipation. Children 6-17 years of age who have been diagnosed with functional constipation and are able to swallow capsules may be eligible to participate. Patients may be compensated for time/travel associated with their participation in the study.
