    7.) Grawemeyer Awards Lecture Series: Behavioral Control, Resilience, and the Medial Prefrontal Cortex

    2016 Grawemeyer Award in Psychology recipient Steven Maier will discuss his award-winning work, which concerns what makes one resistant or vulnerable to stress when bad things happen. Maier showed if test subjects had behavioral control over some element of the adverse event, they were less negatively impacted and also essentially “immunized” against some harmful effects of future bad events. He uncovered in animal subjects the neural mechanism that provides such resilience in the face of trauma.

    Whether the difficult people you deal with are internal, external or both, this workshop will provide you with a better understanding of how to deal effectively with a challenging personality. Identify the characteristics of a difficult person and learn to look beyond the behavior to find the root cause and provide strategies for effective intervention. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to look within themselves to discover barriers or issues that a challenging personality may trigger.

    13.) Adult siblings of individuals with childhood cancer needed for research study

    We are looking for people age 18+ who grew up in the same household with a sibling who was diagnosed with cancer prior to his/her 19th birthday to complete an online survey. The information you provide may assist counselors in identifying special issues when working with adult siblings of individuals with cancer and lead to improved care. Those who complete the survey can enter a drawing to win one of eight $50 gift cards. The survey is available online.

    Please join us as we welcome George King, MD, Chief Scientific Officer, Joslin Diabetes Center; Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. Dr. King will present “Insulin’s actions on the arterial wall: Is it anti- or pro- atherogenic?” The talk will provide a summary on the known pathologies and mechanisms that are postulated to cause the increased risks of cardiovascular disease in diabetic and insulin resistant states. Also providing the newest information on the potential mechanisms by which improving insulin’s actions on the arterial wall can improve cardiovascular function in diabetic states.

    Medicine Grand Rounds features Salvatore Mangione, MD, FACCP, Associate Professor of Medicine and Director, Physical Diagnosis/History of Medicine Courses at Thomas Jefferson University. Dr. Mangione will present the Charles C. Smith Lecture, “Nazi Medicine, Physicians and the Problem of Collective Evil” focusing on understanding the issues of “eugenics,” the role of physicians during the Holocaust, the personality traits of perpetrators, and the personality traits of rescuers.
