    1.) UofL offering free hot chocolate today to students, faculty and staff

    UofL is offering free hot chocolate for students, faculty and staff Thursday, Feb. 19. Beginning at 10 a.m., hot chocolate will be available at the following locations:

    ·       Student Activities Center first floor

    ·       Ekstrom Library first floor

    ·       Davidson Hall first floor

    ·       Miller Information and Technology Center lower level

    ·       City Café on the HSC campus

    2.) ULPD: Plan your route wisely

    When planning your route to or from UofL during snowy weather, ULPD advises using the Metro Louisville Public Works Interactive Map: http://ags2.lojic.org/metrosnowroutes/. This map will show you the snow routes and what streets have been plowed and treated for the best ride to and from the University or other destinations.

    5.) Popular music conference begins today

    Feb. 19 to 21, various locations

    The International Association of the Study of Popular Music Association-US Conference will be held Feb. 19 to 21 at various locations including at UofL. IASPM gathers scholars from around the world and across academic disciplines to examine the many ways musical expression shapes our identities, communities and lives: from Louisville to Nairobi; in jazz and in J-Pop; among amateur home organ players and virtuosic percussionists. The conference features three days of roundtable discussions, panel presentations, and keynote speakers and live music.

    6.) Arctic explorer Lonnie Dupre to speak at PJCS

    UofL Athletics hosts mountain climber, polar explorer and climate change activist Lonnie Dupre. Lonnie just returned from the peak of the tallest mountain in North America after becoming the first to summit Denali alone in January! He was also the first to cross the Arctic Ocean under his own power. Lonnie will share tales of his adventures and describe his personal witness of the detrimental effects of global climate change over 25 years of polar exploring.

    7.) Blues History with the 10th Street Blues Band

    $20 for members of the Filson Historical Society, $25 for non-members

    Local blues history and blues hits from the 1950s and 1960s will be subjects of an evening with the 10th Street Blues Band. Refreshments will be served. The Filson Historical Society is a member of A&S’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

    This taped webinar on the keys to writing a compelling scientific narrative will cover which accomplishments to include and what not to mention. Learn how to highlight your most important work without sounding self-serving and the basic components of a solid narrative. Early investigators are likely not to have a long track record for the narrative, therefore, your presenter will cover career-stage specific aspects of the narrative that tell your story in a unique way.     16.) Call for summer research projects – School of Medicine

    Summer research projects are now being solicited from faculty to submit a biomedical summer research project for our medical students. The student’s stipend support and poster production costs are covered by the School of Medicine’s Summer Research Scholar Program (SRSP) and NIH training grants.     26.) PKU study for 18 to 70 year olds

    The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a medication in 18 to 70 year olds who have a diagnosis of PKU with a high Phe level. If the patient qualifies to take part in this research study, involvement lasts from 27 to 44 weeks with up to 15 study visits. They will receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost. Compensation available for time/travel.

    27.) Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Study for Adolescents and Adults aged 12 to 35 years

    The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety of an experimental medication in 12 to 35 years olds who have recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. If the subject qualifies to take part in this research study, participation lasts up to 2 years; he/she will receive the study medication or a placebo and study-related care at no cost .     28.) Type 2 diabetes mellitus study for children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years

    The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the metabolism, as well as safety, of a medication in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. If the child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will attend 3 clinic visits; receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost.     The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.

    30.) Research study for nausea and vomiting after a scheduled surgery, birth through 17 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting.  Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation.  Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate acetaminophen given into a vein to treat moderate to severe pain in infants and children less than 2 years of age following surgery or an injury.     32.) Pediatric pain study, 7 through 16 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain.  Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation.  Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study.

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to assess the efficacy and safety of an investigational drug used to treat constipation. Children 6-17 years of age who have been diagnosed with functional constipation and are able to swallow capsules may be eligible to participate. Patients may be compensated for time/travel associated with their participation in the study.
