LOUISVILLE, Ky. — An award-winning author of books dealing with homosexuality in the South will speak at the University of Louisville Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ekstrom Library Auditorium.
James T. Sears will promote his new book “Rebels, Rubyfruit and Rhinestones: Queering Space in the Stonewall South.” The non-fiction work deals with the history of homosexuality in the South from 1969 through 1979. The presentation will include a slideshow and an opportunity for questions and answers. Following the presentation, Sears will sell and sign copies of his book.
A South Carolina resident, Sears has written or edited 13 books and has taught at four universities. He is director of the nation’s oldest and largest lesbian and gay archives, and he serves on many editorial boards.
Sears conducted some research for his book through a collection of gay, lesbian and transgender materials now housed at U of L. The William-Nichols collection, formerly known as the Kentucky Gay and Lesbian Library and Archives, is among the nation’s largest collections of gay, lesbian and transgender materials.
