NanoMark Therapeutics, a team of student entrepreneurs from UofL’s College of Business, won the 2010 New Venture Championship April 8-10 at the University of Oregon’s Charles H. Lundquist Center for Entrepreneurship. The national honor carries a $25,000 prize.
In March, the NanoMark team also won top prize in the life science track in Carnegie Mellon’s McGinnis Venture Competition.
Another student team coached by UofL finance professor Russ Ray won a real-cash stock-investment contest sponsored by Sterne & Agee, a Birmingham, Ala., brokerage firm, for the second year in three years.
Ray’s 53 students posted a total return of nearly 27 percent on their start-up investment of $50,000, beating out teams from Auburn University and the universities of Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi. The $6,700 the students earned in the seven-month competition will be used to provide scholarships for finance students.
A third UofL team took eighth place in Division II of the National Academic Quiz Tournament international championship April 10, beating out teams from Princeton, Notre Dame and Stanford universities.

Members of UofL’s quiz bowl team were Colton Wilson, an art history, English, women’s and gender studies and humanities major; Ramapriya Rangaraju, a computer engineering and computer science major; Alex Clifton, an English major; and Thomas Browning, a political science major.
