Led by Ansyn Banks, assistant professor of jazz studies with the Jamey Aebersold Jazz Studies Program, the UofL International Jazz Quintet will demonstrate swing, bebop, cool jazz and hard bop forms on Feb. 13 and modal, ’60’s jazz, ECM label releases and today’s jazz on Feb. 20. Each session starts at 2 p.m. at ear X-tacy’s store, 2226 Bardstown Road.
The free program is an initiative between the partners to showcase jazz genres in an entertaining and educational format. The sessions are designed to help both new listeners and experienced fans deepen their understanding of the music.
Banks will discuss characteristics of the various jazz styles. The music will be demonstrated by students from around the globe and by selections from store CDs. Performances will be conducted on the in-store stage.
Banks directs combos and teaches jazz trumpet, jazz styles and other courses in the UofL jazz program. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Banks has played with some of the most important music figures of recent times such as the legendary Hank Marr and Gene Walker. In addition to the Jazz genre, Banks has shared the stage with Aretha Franklin, The Mighty Dells, The Temptations, Four Tops and other R&B artists.
