The free, public talk will begin at 6 p.m. in Speed Art Museum’s auditorium. Morgenson’s speech is the 2010 UofL Phi Beta Kappa lecture, sponsored by UofL’s College of Arts and Sciences, the Speed Art Museum and the Phi Beta Kappa Association of Kentuckiana. UofL has advanced to a second round of review in its pursuit of a chapter in the honor society, which fosters academic excellence and promotes education in the liberal arts and sciences.
Morgenson is assistant business and financial editor and columnist for The New York Times, where she has covered world financial markets since 1998 and won a Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for Wall Street coverage. Her column appears regularly on the front of the Sunday Times business section.
Vanity Fair’s current issue lists her among the top 100 in its feature The New Establishment 2010, and The Nation’s July 2009 issue featured her in its cover story headline as the most important financial journalist of her generation. Morgenson has been a guest on many national programs including CBS’s Face the Nation, National Public Radio’s Fresh Air and PBS’s The NewsHour and Bill Moyers Journal.
Previously she had two stints at Forbes magazine, where her jobs included assistant managing editor, investigative business writer and editor, and where she oversaw investing sections and its Washington bureau.
Morgenson also served as press secretary for the Forbes for President campaign in 1995-96.
The former Dean Witter stockbroker also had been executive editor at Worth magazine and overseen its financial coverage, including a monthly investigative column. Her other posts included staff writer at Money magazine and editorial assistant and financial columnist at Vogue magazine.
Morgenson is author of the 1997 Forbes Great Minds of Business and co-author of The Woman’s Guide to the Stock Market, published in 1981.
