The exhibits will run through Aug. 11. The Hite will have a reception for both from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on July 26.
Both exhibits are student curated.
Students in the spring curatorial practice seminar put together “Art of the State” after seeing a collection of Soviet-era artwork as part of their course work. Through prints, posters and photography, the students explore where the lines between art, personal expression and propaganda lie; how the artist integrates state influence into the artwork; what the viewer deduces from about the art and the state from the artwork; and what of the artwork is authentic and what manufactured to influence the audience.
“Jim Snodgrass: A Creative Life” features the life’s work of the Jeffersonville, Ind., native. A painter and sculptor, Snodgrass has worked in New York, Indianapolis and Louisville. Now in his 80s, he continues to paint and take commissions. A 2012 master’s candidate, Solveig Espe Slavin-Olson curated the exhibit.
Summer Gallery hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. The gallery will be closed July 4, Aug. 11 and Aug. 18. Admission is free and open to the public.
