The four-day festival will feature guest artist concerts, master classes on technique and artistic development, lectures, a youth guitar orchestra and an international competition with a first prize of $1,000.
The event is open to all enthusiasts and playing levels, said Stephen Mattingly, UofL guitar instructor and festival director.
“A festival is a great way to assemble artists to collaborate and learn from each other in a fun, but intensive, setting,” Mattingly said. “Classic guitars and related music are diverse in both instrument and style. Baroque, lute, six-string and eight-string guitars will be featured in the concerts by artists who play different types of music (ranging) from Renaissance to present day, including classical, jazz, folk, Latin and flamenco styles.”
Concerts will be in the Margaret Comstock Concert Hall, School of Music, on UofL’s Belknap Campus. Highlights include:
- Tantalus Quartet, an ensemble whose repertoire includes renaissance through modern, 8 p.m., Friday, May 28
- Dieter Hennings, guitar, and David Walker, Baroque guitar, 4 p.m., and Jason Vieaux, 8 p.m., Saturday, May 29
- Competition finalists, 4 p.m., (free) and William Yelverton, 8 p.m., Sunday, May 30
- Participants’ concert, 3 p.m., (free) Monday, May 31
Concert tickets, unless otherwise noted above, are $20 for adults and $10 for students and senior citizens.
