University to celebrate Body Appreciation/Body Awareness Week Feb 23-27

    LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The University of Louisville’s Campus Health Services will celebrate Body Awareness/Body Appreciation (BABA) Week Feb. 23-27 with many programs.

    The week—an effort to promote positive body images and healthy lifestyles—will include workouts and discussion groups with Misty Tripoli, creator of The Groove Fitness method and a recovering bulimic who promotes healthy living.

    BABA Week, sponsored by several campus groups, will feature health fairs, a field day, discussion groups, free yoga, a fashion show, documentary films and a clothing drive. Several BABA week activities that open to the public include:

    • “Body Talk with Misty Tripoli,” 2:30- 4 p.m., Red Barn, Feb. 24 and Feb. 25. Tripoli will lead a discussion about body image and Body Groove.
    • “America the Beautiful” film and discussion, 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., Feb. 26. Floyd Theater Student Activities Center. Documentary on the culture of beauty in America and the dangers it presents to young people.
    • “A Season in Hell”, documentary film and panel discussion, 7 p.m., Feb. 27, Floyd Theater, SAC. Documentary, filmed in the 1990s, explores a woman’s struggle with eating disorders. The film includes a new addendum, outlining what happened to the woman more than one decade later. WAVE 3’s Dawne Gee will moderate a panel discussion by eating disorder experts, family members and survivors. Music, resources and snacks. Donations to the East Area Community Ministries Food Pantry are requested.
    • “Feel Good in Your Genes/Jeans,” a collection drive for gently used pants. Public donation sites will be located in the Student Activities Center and at Campus Health Services. Items will be donated to the Healing Place.
    • BABA Week is sponsored by Campus Health Services, Club Programming Committee, Counseling Center, Cultural Center, Get Healthy Now, Health Science Campus Student Government Association, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Services, Minority Association of Premedical Students , Office of the Provost, Panhellenic Council, Prevention, Education and Advocacy on Campus and in the Community, Sodexo Dining Services, Student Activities Board and the Women’s Center.
