NAEYC accreditation goes to early childhood education programs that demonstrate excellence in teaching, relationship-building, health, safety and other areas.
“This is an honor because it recognizes our high standards,” said ELC director Dianna Zink. “Only about 8 percent of all child development centers in the nation hold this distinction.”
ELC, also licensed by the Kentucky Cabinet for Health and Family Services, opened in 2008. Most of its 150 children are from families affiliated with UofL or Family Scholar House. UofL education majors conduct research and enhance their training at the center.
The accreditation is good for five years, during which time the agency may make unannounced visits.
“We strive to offer children an outstanding, holistic experience,” said Ann Larson, dean of UofL’s education college. “Through a balance of education, arts, role-playing and free play, we provide an engaging, joyful environment that gives children the best start in life.”
