Since 2001, the program has received $20 million in NIH funds to promote the development, coordination and sharing of research resources and expertise to expand research opportunities and increase the number of competitive investigators.
KY-INBRE partners include Morehead State University, the University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University, Northern Kentucky University and Western Kentucky University. Nigel Cooper, professor and vice chair for research in UofL’s Department of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology leads the program.
“The fact that our program has been renewed during these very competitive times demonstrates yet again the high quality talent we have at our university and here on the health sciences center campus,” said UofL President James Ramsey.
KY-INBRE partners have focused particularly on the areas of genomics and neuroscience. The program’s accomplishments include creation of a centralized, state-of-the-art facility that allows researchers to analyze many genes in a single experiment quickly and efficiently, and a research base that is used in the study of proteins and their functions. These are available to researchers throughout Kentucky.
The program also has created career development tools for postdoctoral fellows and research associates and built curriculums for new students.
