  • African American Read-In

10 a.m.-noon, Monday, Feb. 7

UofL is joining other groups around the country for the 22nd Annual African American Read-In. Members of the university community will read from plays, poems and books written by African Americans. The free event will be in the Learning Commons, Ekstrom Library. Sponsors are the CODRE Diversity Programming Committee, University Libraries and the English department. 

  • Songs of Freedom

8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 7

The School of Music’s African-American Music Heritage Institute will present the Messengers for Christ choir for the Songs of Freedom, The Men & Women of the Underground Railroad program in Margaret Comstock Concert Hall. The event also will feature a talk by A&S Dean Blaine Hudson, a noted expert on the Underground Railroad. The program is based on the Carnegie Center for Art and History exhibit in New Albany, Ind. Admission is $5 at the door.

  • The Vagina Monologues

7 p.m. Feb. 10-12

A benefit production of The Vagina Monologues, an award-winning play by Eve Ensler about women’s experiences, will be presented at the Playhouse. UofL’s Prevention, Education and Advocacy on Campus and in the Community (PEACC) program sponsors the production, now in its seventh year. The performance is part of V-Day, a global movement to end violence against women and girls. Admission is $8 ($6 in advance) for college students with an ID and $10 for faculty, staff and community members.

  • Vice President Joe Biden

11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will speak as part of the McConnell Center’s spring lecture series. Biden, a senator from Delaware for 36 years, left the Senate in 2008 after being elected the nation’s 47th vice president. He chairs the White House Middle Class Task Force and has overseen implementation of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. No tickets to this event remain, but it will be shown live at mms://livestream.louisville.edu/remotelive

  • Knight and Day

6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Feb. 12, 13

The film Knight & Day, starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, will be shown at the Floyd Theater. Tickets are $1.50 with a student ID or $3 for general admission. (DVD, 109 minutes, rated PG-13)
