Aegis, the UofL Hite Art Institute’s graduate student organization, presents the symposium in conjunction with the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. It takes place at KMAC, 715 W. Main St., Louisville.
Keynote speaker Lydia Matthews, from Parsons New School for Design in New York City, will present “Craft Matters: Exchanging Knowledge in the Wake of Globalization” at 4:30 p.m. The symposium starts at 9:30 a.m. and will include these presentation topics:
- Traversing Boundaries: Cultural Philanthropy and the Craft of Mary Seton Watts
- Traditional and Modern Bilum in Papua New Guinea: A Shift from Bodily Extension to Cultural Bridge
- Why Clay: Material as Experience
- Wallace Mitchell and the Challenge of Craft
- Haptic Rainbow: Installing Craft in the Work of Gabriel Dawe
- More is Less: The Domestic Sublime in Liza Lou’s Kitchen
An exhibit and lecture reception follow the symposium from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is free. Registration is online.
