The Transit Authority of River City (TARC) has adjusted two of its major routes, resulting in new transportation opportunities for UofL employees and students. The revised #4 and #18 routes began circulating Feb. 13. These and all other TARC routes are free for employees and students through a contract between TARC and university.
“We have had an effective partnership with TARC for several years.This past year we asked TARC to evaluate ways to improve service for the university community,” said Larry Owsley, vice president for business affairs. “The adjusted routes will address intercampus connections and provide additional direct routes to both Belknap and HSC. This will help eliminate the need to hunt for parking and it will help the environment by cutting down on the number of vehicles going back and forth between the campuses. We hope it will also increase weekly ridership directly from home to the university.”
The #4 route will run primarily along Fourth Street from near Iroquois Park, through Belknap Campus, to the Health Sciences Center (HSC) and popular downtown spots such as Fourth Street Live! and the KFC Yum! Center. Buses will arrive near Fourth and Cardinal Boulevard (Belknap) and Jackson and Chestnut (HSC) every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. weekdays, and then about every 40 minutes until 11:40 p.m.
The #18 route will link Belknap and HSC via Preston and Jackson streets. Buses will arrive every 15 minutes from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. weekdays on Floyd Street near the UofL bus shelter (Belknap) and Jackson and Broadway (HSC). Route #18 directly connects Okalona by Preston Street and Shively/Valley Station by Dixie Highway to the Belknap Student Activities Center, University Park Apartments and the Health Sciences Center.
“We are constantly working to improve access and services for our students, faculty and staff,” Owsley said. “These new routes will significantly improve travel between campuses and will make them more accessible to those who rely on public transportation. We truly appreciate our working relationship with TARC and their efforts to improve transportation services. Our partnership has greatly benefited the university community.”
All TARC routes are free to UofL students and employees with their university IDs.
