The show will open with a reception at 6 p.m. in conjunction with the First Friday Trolley Hop. At 8 p.m., the University Improvisation and Experimental Music Ensemble will perform.
Bass will present a film installation titled “The Adytum.” Novinger will present an exhibition of mixed media work titled “Dame, Doilies & Divorce.”
Dissecting themes of power and idealism at the intersection of spirituality, sexuality and language, “The Adytum” is a modern secular space for spiritual self-reflection. The film reveals the coming-of-age of a child born into socially dysfunctional circumstances. In contrast to the traditional “linear” format, this film presents a more holistic, “feminine” method of storytelling which weaves plot and theme in a way that mimics “web thought.” The viewer is encouraged to reflect on morality with equal respect to both animal drives and human idealism.
Novinger’s “Dame, Doilies & Divorce” focuses on repurposing historic images and feminine objects to create a contemporary dialogue about the traditions of courtship, marriage and divorce. The use of textiles and feminine objects such as doilies, lace, slips and wallpaper serve as the visual foundation of her work. She examines how these objects, often combined with selected text, create metaphors regarding relationships.
Both exhibits will run through May 15. Gallery Hours: Wednesday–Friday, 11 a.m.–6 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. –3 p.m.; and first Friday, 11 a.m. –9 p.m.
