Jason Wyrick – Humans of UofL

    263

My name is Jason Wyrick and I am a junior sport administration major from Indianapolis, Indiana, where I have lived my whole life prior to attending UofL. I am an only child of a single parent, and my mom is and always has been my biggest supporter. My dad died when I was a little kid, and my mom, who didn’t attend college, always told me that I should go and that she regretted not doing so. She encouraged me to chase my dreams, but most importantly to value my education and to go to college. She always figured that I would go to Indiana University, so when I decided on the University of Louisville as my new home, I was a little nervous to tell her.    Thankfully, she has supported my decision wholeheartedly from that moment. Growing up without my father and being my mom’s only child, I was raised by a committee of family and friends, and leaving them for Louisville was very hard for me, and I am sure it was for them and my mom especially, but my family has always supported this decision and encouraged me. I felt guilty before (and still do sometimes) about leaving my mom and grandparents to come to Louisville, but I have been very blessed to have their support on my journey. I call them all as often as I can, if only to talk for my drive home from somewhere, just to check in. My family means everything to me, and they have all supported my journey here and for that I am very thankful.

Growing up I played soccer, and in high school I lead our student section as well as broadcasting high school sports on radio and television. I took my opportunities to participate in activities I love, and I am thankful I did. Now, I am the leader of Louligans Louisville Men’s Soccer supporters and also the Director of Recruitment for the UofL Ville’ns student section. I love attending sporting events here at UofL and getting crazy, and that’s how I’ve become kind of famous among Card Nation as “that bearded guy from the student section that was on TV” and I get asked if that’s me. I always chuckle and tell them yes, and wonder how I got here. But it is simple really, I love my Cards and I wear my heart on my sleeve. That’s just who I am. And for those reading this that might come to UofL or maybe are already here, I would just encourage everyone to be yourself and enjoy what you enjoy, don’t be afraid to be you. In a world full of fake people, I am just… well, me. What you see is what you get, and I believe it is what makes me unique. Don’t ever be afraid to stand out in the crowd in your own way, because if you try to be “the next” anything or anyone, you are destined to fail. Be you, and be the best you that you can be. There is no one like you! You’d be amazed what you really are capable of. I have sure surprised myself along the way. What isn’t surprising though is that I wouldn’t change a thing. My life prior to and at our University of Louisville has had its tumultuous moments, but they have molded me into the person I am today: a human of UofL.
