    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    UofL fourth year dental students, along with faculty Dr. Brian Shumway, Dr. Larry Gettleman, Dr. Mark Bernstein and Dr. F. John Firriolo provided free head and neck assessments to 125 people at the 2015 Kentucky State Fair. The screenings were offered in collaboration with the Kentucky Cancer Program and Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. This was the 23rd year the School of Dentistry participated in the fair.

    Join President Ramsey for a fun, easy 30-minute ride to campus! Riders will leave together and then split into two groups – one headed to Belknap campus and another to HSC. Dr. Ramsey is riding one of the bikes available to anyone at UofL for free daily check-out through UofL Bikeshare, which recently expanded to eight locations: GHN Wellness Center, SRC, Community Park, Kurz, Bettie Johnson, Miller, Threlkeld and Unitas.

    Free for GHN Wellness Center members

    Energize your mornings and ignite your metabolism in 30 minutes with a total body workout. Let this new class energize you in a way that nothing else can. This total body workout is designed to strengthen the cardiovascular system, tone muscles, and boost balance, flexibility, endurance and speed. Exercise equipment may include: dumbbells, resistance bands, stability balls, BOSU, elevated benches and other equipment. Exercises can be modified to accommodate all fitness levels.

    5.) HR Workshop: Professional etiquette for the modern workplace

    Knowing the “why” behind etiquette protocols helps with buy-in and lays the groundwork for confidence and putting people at ease. This workshop takes a look at the basic protocols you need to have in your professional toolbox in order to better handle awkward situations.     Kornhauser Library is offering EndNote training. EndNote is a software program, for Mac or PC, used to create bibliographies, import/export references from databases, convert references to a chosen citation style and to manage PDFs.

    7.) Lab Safety and Hazardous Waste Training scheduled

    Sept. 10, 9 to 11:45 a.m., Nursing School, K wing, Room 2034

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend this training. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years and may be completed in Bioraft (online refresher training). Bring employee/student ID number to sign in. Attendees can pre-register at www.louisville.edu/dehs, however advance registration is not required.

    8.) KBRIN Bioinformatics Journal Club presents first paper for discussion

    Please join us as Eric Rouchka, a member of the UofL computer engineering and computer science department and the KBRIN Bioinformatics Core, presents our first paper for discussion, “Design and bioinformatics analysis of genome-wide CLIP experiments.” The KBRIN Bioinformatics Journal Club will meet most Wednesdays from Sept. 9 through December 9 during the fall semester.     9.) 15th Annual Geriatrics Symposium: Maximizing independence for optimal aging

    Registration is still open for the symposium. David Morris, PhD, interim chair of department of physical therapy at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who is well known for his expertise in physical therapy for seniors, will speak on Fitness for Life. Continuing education credits available for physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, social workers and dental professionals. Presented by the Institute for Sustainable Health & Optimal Aging.

    Bert Little, PhD, will present The Oaxaca Project – Type 2 Diabetes: Value of Human Isolates. Type 2 Diabetes is an epidemic in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries. Amerindian (indigenous) populations have exceptionally high prevalence. Two genetic isolates in the Valley of Oaxaca, southern Mexico are compared.

    Kicking off the A&S All Stars series is professor John Hale’s talk Ancient Louisville: 10,000 Years of Forgotten History at the Falls of the Ohio, illuminating a Louisville once thought lost. Cheer on our accomplished faculty and alumni this fall and enjoy a light breakfast and coffee compliments of Heine Brothers coffee. Hale is director of the Liberal Studies Project.

    The Liberal Studies Project and the Kentucky Society of the Archaeological Institute of America present Dr. Neils who specializes in classical Athens and the Parthenon, Greek vase painting, Etruscan art and archaeology, and cultural heritage issues. Her most recent books are The Parthenon From Antiquity to the Present, The British Museum Concise Introduction to Ancient Greece and Women in the Ancient World (British Museum and J. Paul Getty Museum, 2011).

    Medicine Grand Rounds features Henry H. Ng, MD, assistant professor medicine & pediatrics, clinical director, PRIDE Clinic at MetroHealth Medical Center at Case Western Reserve University. Dr. Ng will present Incorporating Transgender Care into Everyday Primary Care focusing on factors which enhance transgender health delivery in primary care settings, factors in providing competent transgender health services, and best practice approaches to transgender health care.
