    DID YOU KNOW

    Today’s visit by U.S. Supreme Court Justice Neil M. Gorsuch will mark the third time UofL’s McConnell Center has hosted a SCOTUS justice as part of its Distinguished Speakers Series. The other visits included Chief Justice John Roberts in 2009 and Associate Justice Clarence Thomas in 2000.

     

    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

    Jonathan Becker, MD, has been named chair of the Department of Family and Geriatric Medicine, and Charles R. Woods Jr., MD, MS, has been named chair of the Department of Pediatrics. Both appointments were approved by UofL’s Board of Trustees and are effective Oct. 1.

    Free lunch to celebration CCU’s one-year anniversary on campus

    Call for nominations: Pride Week 2017 faculty/staff Ally Award

    October 17 deadline

    The students, faculty, and staff served by the LGBT Center announce the annual Pride Week Faculty/Staff Ally Award. Through these awards we seek to honor those who work alongside us every day to dismantle prejudice. The winner will be announced during a Pride Week event.     Support raiseRED at Kentucky Blood Center blood drive

    September 22, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Red Barn

    Join us at Kentucky Blood Center’s blood drive on the Belknap Campus; blood will stay in Kentucky and/or go to help areas hit by recent hurricanes. Mention “raiseRED”, and a $5 donation will be given to support UofL’s pediatric clinic, as well as oncology and hematology research. Donors receive a free t-shirt.

    Master of Public Health (MPH) prospective student information sessions

    UofL Tableau Day at ShelbyHurst

    Sept. 27, 9 a.m. to noon, Founders Union Building, ShelbyHurst Campus

    The event will highlight Tableau’s data analytics product, and will include presentations from users at the School of Dentistry and from the Kentucky Center for Education and Workforce Statistics. Canning and pickling are great solutions for preserving firmer veggies like cucumbers, okra, green beans, beets, carrots, radishes, summer squash, and more. Join us in UofL’s organic garden for a hands-on workshop about how to can and pickle vegetables so you can continue eating out of your garden all winter long. We’ll have some things to work with, but feel free to bring any excess produce you’d like to can.

    Medicine Grand Rounds features Shirish S. Barve, PhD, Professor of Medicine, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Scientific Director, UofL Alcohol Research Center at UofL. Barve will present “Alcoholic Liver Disease and Neuroinflammation: A Gut Reaction?” focusing on alcohol-induced gut microbial dysbiosis/gut-barrier dysfunction, and the potential of gut-dysbiosis/barrier dysfunction in developing effective treatment strategies for alcoholic liver disease/neuroinflammation.
