    Did You Know?

    The “k” in Belknap is silent. UofL’s Belknap campus is named after a prominent business family in Louisville in the 1800s. According to the Filson Historical Society, former uses of UofL’s Belknap property included a cemetery, a Civil War hospital and a correctional facility for children.

    4.) Mathematics Colloquium Series focuses on applications of finite mixture modeling

    September 23, 3-4 p.m., Natural Sciences 333

    Professor Xuwen Zhu of the University of Louisville Mathematics Department will present “Finite mixture modeling and model-based clustering.” Applications of finite mixture modeling are found in almost all research areas due to its flexibility in describing a wide range of phenomena. We discuss model-based clustering under the assumption of a 1-1 correspondence between clusters and model components; each group of data can be seen as a sample from some underlying distribution.     5.) Innovative Career Paths topic of discussion

    Washington, DC-based attorney Andrew Morton is chair of law firm Handler Thayer’s sports and entertainment law group. He works with public figures who want to maximize their social impact. His presentation will educate students about the law of philanthropy and broaden their vision of career possibilities.

    8.) Bioengineering Department Seminar Series continues

    Sept. 22, noon to 1:30 p.m., Vogt Building, Room 311

    The Bioengineering Department Seminar Series continues with the topic, “Development of Targeted Therapeutics and Delivery Vehicles to Limit Pathogen Colonization of the Oral Cavity,” presented by Dr. Donald Demuth, an oral microbiologist who studies the mechanisms that contribute to the formation and development of microbial biofilms. The long term goal of his research is to develop approaches that can control these processes for the treatment of common oral diseases such as periodontitis.

    We hope we never encounter an active shooter situation on our campus, but we know preparation and planning can help reduce the negative impacts in case such an event occurs. Please join us in the for our Active Shooter Training where we will discuss how you can respond, developing the Survival Mindset, and what you can expect from law enforcement officers. Each class will be full at 50 participants, so please register online.

    Want to get started with EndNote, the citation management software program freely available to all UofL faculty, staff, and students?     12.) Asthma in older adults research study

    IRB# 13.0419

    If you have asthma and are at least 60 years old you may qualify for this longitudinal study that will examine the environmental and personal factors in asthma control. Participants must be not a current smoker or have other lung diseases. Participants will be compensated. This study is being conducted by Dr. Barbara Polivka.

    Mondays and Wednesdays, 12:10-1 p.m., Get Healthy Now Wellness Center at Humana Gym

    Barre Basics uses a combination of postures inspired by ballet and other disciplines like Yoga and Pilates. You will focus on isometric strength training combined with high reps of small range-of-motion movements. Suitable for all fitness levels. First class is always free.

    Medicine Grand Round features Julio A. Ramirez, MD, FACP, professor of Medicine and Chief, Division of Infectious Diseases at UofL. Dr. Ramirez will present “Intravascular Infections and the Heroin Epidemic in Kentucky” focusing on reviewing current data on heroin use in Kentucky, the pathogenesis of intravascular infections, clinical manifestations and diagnosis of endocarditis, and current challenges in management of patients with heroin use and intravascular infections.

Dr. Keith will present “E-Cigarettes: Friend or Foe?” On October 5, Ali J. Marian, MD, professor in Cardiovascular Research, director, Center for Cardiovascular Genetic Research, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
