    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    The University of Louisville Student Recreation Center has won another design award. In addition to receiving national LEED Gold certification, the facility has won a 2014 “Excellence in Structural Engineering” Award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Association. The award will be given in New Orleans Sept.19. The SRC opened Oct. 28, 2013.

    1.) Employees asked to nominate outstanding staff performers

    Deadline Sept. 19

    The Office of the President is accepting nominations for Outstanding Performance Awards. The awards recognize classified and professional/administrative staff for their outstanding performance and commitment to service. Recipients receive plaques, a $1,000 cash award and a letter of appreciation for their personnel files. President James Ramsey also hosts a reception in their honor.

    2.) New Classic Film Series offered by UofL Lifelong Learning

    Tuesdays beginning Sept. 16, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Founders Union Room 6, Shelby Campus

    $79

    View eight classic films with local filmmaker and film historian Greg Willihnganz beginning Sept. 16. Films include Swing Time (1936); The Women (1939); Strangers on a Train (1951); The Guns at Batasi (1962); Zorba the Greek (1964); Airplane (1971); All the President’s Men (1976) and Life After Tomorrow (2006).

    3.) PLAN offers workshop for graduate students on presenting research

    Sept. 8, 2 to 3 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    This session will prepare students to effectively present their research at an academic conference, public forum, or a thesis or dissertation defense. Students will learn practical strategies for dealing with stage fright and communicating information during an oral presentation. Finally, students will learn how to create scientific posters and how to handle the author session for discussing their poster during an academic conference.

    4.) PLAN hosts graduate student panel on how to manage graduate school

    Sept. 10, 2 to 3:30 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    Are you just beginning your graduate program and want to learn how to be successful? If so, attend this session! At this workshop, a panel of current graduate students, representing different levels, programs and life experiences, will share their collective wisdom about how to successfully navigate life as a graduate student. Graduate students interested in attending can register and find more information on the PLAN website.

    5.) Gear up for the GRE in free workshop

    Sept. 30, 4 to 8 p.m., Shumaker Building Room 139

    Free

    The School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies and REACH are hosting a GRE test information workshop. UofL alumni and staff, post-baccalaureate students, current graduate and undergraduate students and community members are invited to attend. Please register, as space is limited. Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis.

    6.) Lab safety and hazardous waste training and radiation safety orientation scheduled

    Sept. 11, 9 a.m. to noon, Donald Baxter I Building, Auditorium

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend the Lab Safety/Hazardous Waste session, 9 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years. Individuals who will work with or around radioactive materials should attend the Radiation Orientation session, which is from 11:05 a.m. to noon. Bring employee/student ID number to sign in.

    8.) Proposals being accepted for 2014 Kentucky Engagement Conference

    Proposals are being accepted for the Kentucky Engagement Conference hosted by Morehead State University, November 19. Conference theme is “Productive Partnerships Through Stewardship and Engagement.” The VP Office for Community Engagement will cover registration cost for presenters and non-presenters who wish to attend the conference.

    9.) Faculty/staff invited to nominate students for Mortar Board Honorary

    Nominations due 4 p.m. Sept. 12

    Life membership $110

    Faculty and staff are invited to nominate undergraduate students to apply for Mortar Board National Senior Honorary. Requirements are excellence in scholarship, leadership and service. The chapter is active in service to campus and the community with book drives, soup kitchen help and public lectures. Requirements include a GPA of 3.15 and 60 current credit hours.

    10.) Health Science Educator I scheduled

    Sept. 24, noon to 1 p.m., Kornhauser Auditorium

    The topic will be “A Leader’s Role in Addressing LGBT Health,” by Dr. John Davis. He will speak to how engaged leadership has the ability to integrate LGBT inclusion into education, patient care, faculty affairs and policies. This session aims to empower leaders, including students and practitioners, to ensure LGBT inclusion by providing a clinically relevant overview of LGBT health disparities and their cost to healthcare, increasing awareness of the current gaps in LGBT academic medicine, and outlining easy wins for leadership to integrate and evaluate LGBT initiatives at their own institutions.1.0 CME credit offered. Lunch will be served.

    11.) Health Science Educator II scheduled

    Sept. 24, 2 to 3 p.m., Abell 110

    The topic will be “Working with LGBT Patients: A practical, skills-based training for health professionals,” by Dr. John Davis. In this interactive workshop, Dr. Davis will present the LGBT and DSD-affected Curriculum Integration Objectives developed within the Association of the American Medical Colleges and provide practical examples of how they can be implemented into existing curriculum. Participants from various health professions (nursing, dental, medical) will have the opportunity to identify crucial skills needed in their given clinical setting, and develop profession-specific plans for implementation. 1.0 CME credit offered.
