    2.) Schnatter Center inaugural event: social psychologist Jonathan Haidt

    Social psychologist Jonathan Haidt, PhD, will discuss What Capitalism Does to Us … and For Us at the inaugural event of the John H. Schnatter Center for Free Enterprise at the College of Business. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear from Haidt, who has been named one of the top global thinkers by Foreign Policy Magazine and a top world thinker by Prospect Magazine. His TED talks have garnered four million views and he’s been featured on Bill Moyers, The Colbert Report, Nightline and in many other TV, radio and print interviews.

    3.) Grawemeyer 30th: Howard Gardner, author of ‘Multiple Intelligences’

    Sept. 29, 5 p.m., Ekstrom Library, W104

    Free

    Dr. Howard Gardner, developmental psychologist and Harvard professor, received the Grawemeyer Award in Education in 1990 for his theories in his book, “Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multiple Intelligences.” He will be speaking via Skype. Please come and bring your students. This event is hosted by the College of Education and is part of our 30th Anniversary Grawemeyer Award event.

    4.) Second annual Feast on Equality 5K Fun Run

    Oct. 10, 9 a.m., Hogan’s Fountain, Cherokee Park, Registration fee $25

    This year, the event will include prizes for Halloween costumes and food trucks at the finish line to help you recover after the race … all to support LGBT students and programs at UofL and continue our effort to be the most welcoming, inclusive campus in the country! Many thanks to Humana, Inc. for its sponsorship of this event and the Feast on Equality steering committee for their dedication to LGBT students.

    5.) October events in Old Louisville

    ·       St. James Court Art Show October 2-4, 10 a.m.- 6 p.m. (Friday and Saturday) 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. (Sunday); 750 juried artists. Street closures and parking information here.

    ·       The Garvin Gate Blues Festival October 9-10 6:30 p.m.- 11 p.m. (Friday) 2:00 p.m. -11 p.m. (Saturday); Free music street festival on Oak Street between 4th and 6th streets near Garvin Place.  2015 is a Tribute to Chicago Blues and Muddy Waters.

    ·       The Victorian Tales of Terror is a new outdoor theater/tour in Old Louisville which runs October 15-18, 7 to 9 p.m. nightly with tours departing every 10 minutes from the Historic Old Louisville Neighborhood and Visitors Center in Central Park. Tickets are $20 in advance, call to reserve your tour time 502-635-5244. Or $25 day of show. 

     

    6.) Churchill Downs invites UofL community to ‘Big Shot’ event

    Oct. 3, rain or shine, enter through Gate 10

    Churchill Downs is inviting the UofL community to participate in a Rochester Institute of Technology project, “Big Shot,” to photograph Churchill Downs using light from thousands of local volunteers’ flashlights or other handheld lights. Volunteers will use their own light source, usually a flashlight or camera flash unit, and shine it on a particular area of the racetrack while the photo is taken with an extended exposure.  Participants will receive a high resolution file from the event. Gates open at 7:30 p.m.; arrive no later than 8:30 p.m.; photos will be taken after sunset at approximately 9 p.m.; wear dark clothing.

    7.) Author Etgar Keret speaking on his memoir, ‘The Seven Good Years’

    Hailed as the voice of young Israel and one of its extraordinary writers, Etgar Keret is internationally acclaimed for his short stories that capture the craziness of life in Israel and the human condition at large. Shot through with a dark, tragicomic sensibility, he offers a window on a surreal world that is at once funny and sad. This wise, witty memoir is full of wonder and love, poignant insights, and irrepressible humor. Etgar Keret will also sign copies of his books, which will be on sale.

    9.) How to Write an Effective Data Management Plan: What NIH Reviewers Want to See

    During this webinar, you will learn what counts as data, and understand the agencies’ expectations and requirements for the data management plan. The presenter will cover how to think about managing your data before you begin your proposed research to insure usability, long-run preservation and access. You will get the guidelines on funding the plan and examine model data management plans and processes to create them. This is not hard but it is a requirement for a competitive proposal.

This is a great opportunity to prepare your resume to engage in the Career Development Center’s Internship Program!

    11.) Green Tip: UofL BikeShare expanded

    Free bike checkout from gyms and housing. The Sustainability Council’s BikeShare Program can help you ditch the car and discover the joys of getting around without pollution or wasted time and money! Anyone with valid UofL ID may check out a bike and lock free for the day. Most bikes also have a basket for carrying items. Bikes are available year-round on a first-come, first-served basis from the front desk at eight Belknap locations: Get Healthy Now Wellness Center, SRC, Bettie Johnson, Community Park, Kurz, Miller, Threlkeld and Unitas.
