    ·       PHOTOS: Dr. George Pantalos, bioengineering and surgery professor with the UofL Cardiovascular Innovation Institute, took four UofL students to Houston where they conducted more tests in zero-gravity on the astrosurgery device he is developing with researchers at Carnegie Melon. This was the third time since 2012 that Dr. Pantalos and his research team tested the device in zero-G. View here.

    State of the University

    1.) Today: President’s address; renaming of Freedom Park

    UofL officials will dedicate the Charles H. Parrish, Jr., Freedom Park in honor of the university’s first African-American faculty member at 10 a.m. at the park, which is located along Cardinal Boulevard between Second and Third streets. UofL President James Ramsey will give his 12th annual State of the University address at 2:30 p.m. in Comstock Concert Hall in the School of Music. The Cardinal Marching Band drum line will lead a processional through campus beginning at 2:15 p.m., and a post-event reception will be held at 3:30 p.m.

    2.) Flu shot clinic Thursday at Abell Administration Building

    7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Room 109-110

    There will only be two large flu shot clinics on the HSC campus this year! Students, faculty and staff can get free flu shots through Campus Health Services ($5 for retirees). A full schedule and a consent form are at http://louisville.edu/campushealth. Download, print and complete the consent form for the fastest service.  You must have your UofL ID with you to get a free flu shot! Get a shot and get a treat!

    Get ready for 2016 Open Enrollment! Make an appointment with Get Healthy Now for a free, optional biometric screening. Screenings provide blood pressure, weight, waist/hip measurements and blood cholesterol/glucose data. Use this information to complete the online health risk assessment during Open Enrollment, required annually for GHN participation to earn the monthly premium incentive.     5.) Designer eyewear trunk show is Thursday

    Sept. 17, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Kentucky Lions Eye Center lobby, 301 E. Muhammad Ali Blvd.

    UofL Physicians-Eye Specialists is hosting a designer eyewear trunk show. Frames for glasses and prescription sunglasses will be 50 percent off. Brands include Bebe, Nine West, Diane von Furstenberg, Calvin Klein, Ray-Ban and Maui Jim. Non-prescription sunglasses will be 20 percent off; all contact lenses 20 percent off.

    6.) Support raiseRED at Sept. Downs After Dark

    UofL’s nationally recognized, student-led philanthropic campaign raiseRED plays an integral role in the fight to end pediatric cancer and better the lives of Louisville children and their families. Join raiseRED as they kick-off the 2015 – 2016 fundraising year Sept. 19 at Downs After Dark at Churchill Downs. Gates open at 5 p.m., the first race is at 6 p.m., and the raiseRED race starts at 7:26 p.m. A portion of each ticket sold through the student group will benefit raiseRED.     7.) Friends of the School of Music 5k Run/Walk is Saturday

    Sept. 19, 8 a.m., Hogan’s Fountain, Cherokee Park; Entry fee $25

    Run to benefit the UofL School of Music. The Friends of the School of Music are hosting this 5K run/walk with music around each corner. Enjoy a steel drum band, high school drum lines and much more. Louisville’s own Patrick Henry Hughes will be doing the race send off! The Friends of the UofL School of Music was founded in 1991 with the mission of supporting the school by providing its students financial assistance. Since its inception the organization has raised more than $600,000 through member contributions and special fundraising events. This first year event follows a course through Cherokee Park starting and finishing at Hogan’s Fountain.

    8.) Call for gender equity/professional development award, nominations and application

    Nominations and applications for The Mary K. Tachau Gender Equity Award and the M. Celeste Nichols Professional Development Award are being accepted through Oct. 9. The equity award goes to a member of the UofL community whose work has directly furthered women’s equality and gender equity. The Nichols Award goes to a UofL graduate or professional school student to support academic and professional enrichment beyond normal program expenses. Deadlines: October 8.

    12.) Clothing exchange project for children begins Monday

    The UofL Women’s Center Student Parent Association (S.P.A.)/Moms Support Group is sponsoring its annual Clothing Exchange Project for Children. New or gently used infant and children’s clothing, shoes, toys, new bags of disposable diapers/toddler pull-ups are being accepted in the Women’s Center, Sept. 21 through Oct. 16.     19.) Myanmar’s Political Crisis: Buddhist Nationalism and Ethnic Violence

    The Center for Asian Democracy at the University of Louisville presents its annual lecture featuring Wai Wai Nu, human rights activist, peace advocate, lawyer, former political prisoner in Burma, and founder of two organizations fighting for justice and equality for women in Burma.     20.) Children 8 to 13 years needed for anxiety and worry study

    IRB #13.0923 Are you stressed? Is your child stressed, anxious or worried? We can help! The UofL Developmental Psychopathology Lab is conducting a study examining the nature of worry and anxiety in parents and children. Parents and their children between the ages of 8 and 13 years are eligible to participate. Participants will be compensated $20 for their time and receive free diagnostic interviews, detailed feedback and a report outlining the results of our assessment

    21.) Study for adults with difficulty understanding speech in noise

    Dr. Jill Preminger, department of audiology, is conducting a research study of an investigational study medicine for adults with age-related hearing loss and difficulty understanding speech in noise. Subjects must be 60-89 years old and cannot be hearing aid users. Subjects will receive evaluations by an audiologist and physician and have a 50/50 chance of receiving the study medicine or placebo. Participation may last up to 10 weeks and will include compensation. IRB #14.1295

    Medicine Grand Rounds features Jorge A. Rios, MD, assistant professor of medicine in the James Graham Brown Cancer Center at UofL. Dr. Rios will present The Non-Cancer Provider: An Untapped Resource in the War on Cancer focusing on the progress in the war on cancer in some common malignancies, obstacles of implementing clinical trial findings to real-world settings, and the role of primary care providers in translating benefits of current therapies to patients outside of clinical trials.
