    State of the University

    1.) SOTU Week opening event today

    Sept. 15, 11 a.m., Ekstrom Library, Chao Auditorium

    State of the University week begins today with a free, public presentation by Kevin Cosby, president of Simmons College, on the history and vision of that school. The presentation will coincide with a two-week exhibit of historical photos of Simmons in the Chao lobby.

    3.) Last day to register for Geriatric Health Care Symposium

    Event Sept. 19, 7 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., Seelbach Hilton, 500 S. Fourth St.; pre-register by 4 p.m. Sept. 15

    The theme for the 14th Annual Geriatric Health Care Symposium is “Prevention Across the Spectrum of Aging.” This annual symposium provides up-to-date training in geriatric care for health care providers and all interested in the care of elders. Today is the last day to pre-register to ensure space and lunch. After today, we will take registration based on space availability. Presented by the Institute for Sustainable Health and Optimal Aging.

    4.) Active Shooter Exercise

    Sept. 15, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

    There will be an Active Shooter exercise in the Audit Services Building at 425 West Lee St. today. The building will be closed from 9:30 until 10:30 and access will be denied. People walking near the building may hear simulated gunshots, but the noise should be confined within the building.

    Labor scholar Toni Gilpin speaks on a militant Louisville union from 1950s, FE-236, whose black and white leaders were early challengers of local segregation laws. Evening free lecture at 6 p.m. at National Association of Letter Carriers, 4815 Poplar Level Rd. Co-sponsored by the Kentucky Labor Institute, Greater Louisville Central Labor Council, the University of Louisville Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research and the departments of history and Pan-African studies.

    8.) PLAN offers workshop on teaching research and information literacy skills

    Sept. 16, 2 to 3 p.m., Ekstrom Library, Room 117A

    Many fields have now identified literacies for their practitioners and students. How is information literacy similar to or distinct from other types of literacy? What is information literacy in the context of academia? This session will answer these questions, discuss current scholarship on information literacy and research practices, and outline how research instruction can be scaffolded.     9.) PLAN hosting dissertation and thesis workshop for graduate students on HSC

    Sept. 18, 3 to 4 p.m., Nursing/Public Health, Room 2035, K-Wing

    This workshop is for students writing (or anticipating writing) a dissertation, thesis or a similar project for which a copy will need to be submitted to the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies. Participants will learn how to implement the university’s submission guidelines about format, layout, etc. Graduate students interested in attending can register and find more info on the PLAN website.

Dr. Wong’s presentation “Dexamethasone exerts profound interference on Novo TTF-100A & Chemotherapy efficacy for recurrent Glioblastoma” will provide an understanding of the mechanism of action of alternating electric field therapy.
