    2.) Visiting artist Nate Larson to lecture

    Free and open to the public

    In conjunction with his exhibition “New American Landscapes” in Schneider Hall Galleries, Nate Larson will present a lecture in the Chao Auditorium. New American Landscapes is a series of color photographs taken while traveling. Struck by the patterns and easy repetition of travel and tourism, the photographs are meditations on the man-altered American landscape and seek an un-monumental understanding of the human experience within it.

    3.) Travelers to Africa need to check in with Campus Health Services

    To students, staff and faculty who have traveled to Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea or Nigeria recently or who are entering the university from one of these countries: In compliance with CDC and American College Health Association guidelines for university campuses, anyone who has traveled to one of the high-risk countries associated with the Ebola outbreak are directed to contact Campus Health Services at 852-6479 for a brief risk assessment. More information about the university’s response to the Ebola crisis in West Africa is posted on the DEHS website.

    5.) Bone marrow drive scheduled for HSC

    Have you signed up to be a bone marrow donor yet? Owen McMasters is a 15-year-old Trinity High School student from Louisville who is fighting leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant. You might be his match or you could be a match for the one of the thousands of other patients fighting blood cancer. Sharing America’s Marrow will be registering donors and all it takes to join the registry is a cheek swab and a one-page consent form—it only takes 5 minutes!

    The Tamburro Symposium is the first dedicated conference on environmental chemicals and liver disease. Highlights of the two-day conference include nearly 30 total lectures.     11.) Library service change announced for distance education users

    Beginning Sept. 29, those participating in distance education courses will need an ILLiad account to request articles and books through InterLibrary Loan and Document Delivery. The change in procedure is due to the merger of Distance Learning Library Services with the Ekstrom Library Circulation Department. If you do not have an ILLiad account, register here.

    In Who’s the MVP of the American Founding?, political scientist Michael Federici, PhD, (Mercyhurst University) and historian Michael Schwarz, PhD, (Ashland University) will consider the competing political philosophies and cultural legacies of two central American founders, Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. In this debate of revolutionary proportions, which side are you on:  #TeamAlex or #TeamTJ? The event marks the first talk of the McConnell Center’s public lecture series.

    13.) Shambaugh talks about China

    David Shambaugh, professor of political science and international affairs and director of the China Policy Program at George Washington University, wrote the recent acclaimed book, “China Goes Global: The Partial Power.” He is considered one of the world’s leading experts on Chinese politics and Chinese foreign policy.     14.) Liar, Temptress, Soldier, Spy: Four Women Undercover in the Civil War

    Karen Abbott will talk about the four extraordinary women portrayed in her book: Belle Boyd, a courier and spy for the Confederate army; Rose O’Neale Greenhow, who engaged in affairs with powerful Northern politicians to gather intelligence; Elizabeth Van Lew, a Richmond abolitionist who orchestrated a far-reaching espionage ring; and Emma Edmonds, who assumed the identity of a man and enlisted as a Union soldier.  Reservations are requested.     The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).     The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting.  Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation.  Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain.  Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation.  Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study.
