    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

    The Kentucky Board of Education named Dr. W. Blake Haselton, superintendent-in-residence and associate clinical professor in the College of Education and Human Development, as the first recipient of the David Karem Award during the board’s regular meeting Oct. 4 in Frankfort. The award, honoring former KBE member and state legislator, David Karem, is given annually to state policymakers, education leaders or citizens who have contributed to the improvement of education through venues such as national commissions, task forces or other significant boards and organizations.

    Monday, Oct. 9: UofL is ranked the top school in Kentucky when it comes to sustainability initiatives. The man who coordinates those initiatives is Justin Mog. Criminal Justice professor Kristin Swartz discusses her research on correctional officers and PTSD. 
    Tuesday, Oct. 10: Fulbright Scholar Ariel Weaver just returned to Louisville after spending months in Africa teaching and researching. Air pollution can impact heart disease and cause other health problems. Aruni Bhatnagar is doing the research. Chris Yung is an expert on U.S. – China relations.

    Marketing and creative services agencies available to campus

    The University of Louisville has contracted with five partner agencies to assist with marketing and creative services available to campus. All of the agencies are highly respected in the fields of higher education, market research, creative services, digital marketing, video services and more. Departments should contact OCM for consultation prior to contacting an agency partner.     Information Security Office Cyber Security Awareness Month

    October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM), an annual campaign to raise awareness about the importance of cybersecurity. In support of NCSAM, the University’s Information Security Office will be providing training, tools and tips to help you keep personal and university information safe.     Historical Walking Tours

    Get Healthy Now is sponsoring Historical Walking Tours through Belknap campus 12-12:50 p.m. every Wednesday from Oct. 4 to Nov. 15. Those interested in participating just need to meet up at the Ekstrom Library Porch (interior of campus side, across from Humanities Building).The tours will be lead by Dr. Tom Owen, veteran walking tour raconteur and local historian, who has been an archivist at UofL’s Archives and Special Collections for 42 years.

    Master of Public Health (MPH) prospective student information session

    October 17, noon to 1 p.m., Room W210, Ekstrom Library, Belknap; Free lunch with RSVP
    The School of Public Health and Information Sciences (SPHIS) will host information sessions to allow undergraduate, graduate, professional, and medical students to learn what the MPH has to offer in Biostatistics, Health Promotion and Behavior, Epidemiology, Health Policy, Population Health Management, and Global Public Health/emphasis on Maternal and Child Health.     Signature Partnership 10-Year Celebration and Recognition Ceremony

    October 16, 6-7:30 p.m., Louisville Central Community Center, 1300 West Muhammad Ali Blvd.

    The university community is invited to attend this ceremony marking the decade long work of the Signature Partnership Initiative.     Information Security Office training: Email Security

    Oct. 12, 3- 4 p.m., Ekstrom Library: Chao Auditorium; Free
    Have you been a victim of the recent ransomware or email phishing attacks? Are you a new employee or are you just in need of an email security refresher? If you have questions about email security then this training is for you. Lisa Cooper will present topics including recent email viruses, email encryption, VPN utilization, passwords, Wi-Fi and cell phone security. You will also learn how to spot bogus email messages.     Lab Safety and Hazardous Waste Training Radiation Training

    October 9, 9-11:45 a.m., 2034, K-wing (Nursing School), HSC; Free

    New lab employees who work with chemicals should attend this training. Recurrent training is required every three years and may be completed online. Individuals who work with or around radioactive materials should attend the Radiation Safety Orientation session, which begins at 11 a.m. Bring lab top computer. Attendees can pre-register online.

    Research funding opportunity

    Pilot project grants from The Center for Restorative Medicine are available for seeding of novel research to facilitate additional funding, foster new collaborative partnerships and/or support junior faculty. We anticipate funding three pilot projects of $50,000. Faculty leadership will review for consistency with the mission of the Center for Restorative Medicine and advisory board will review proposals for innovation and scientific merit.     Host a Meatless Monday potluck in October

    Whether you’re planning your Meatless Monday potluck for your office, school, or home, here are a few tips for launching a successful gathering. Get organized. Pick a date, time, and location. Email your participants and ask everyone to sign up for a main dish, salad, side dish, dessert, or beverage. Encourage some attendees to choose dishes that can be served cold; others warm, depending on the season.

    Alicia Kelso is the director of social media and digital content. She joined UofL in 2015 as director of communications at the Brandeis School of Law. She also serves as a senior contributor at Forbes.com, writing about the restaurant industry, which she has covered since 2010. Her work has been featured in publications around the world, including NPR, Bloomberg, The Seattle Times, Good Morning America and Franchise Asia Magazine.
