    UofL’s Garden Commons at the Cultural Center is a community space for learning about organic urban agriculture and sustainable food systems. The Garden Commons is open to participation throughout the year from students, staff, faculty and community members. 

    FACULTY AND STAFF NOTABLES

    Tara Schapmire, PhD, has been elected president-elect of the Association of Oncology Social Work. Her three-year term begins in January 2017. Schapmire is an assistant professor at the UofL School of Medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine, Palliative Care and Medical Education of the Department of Medicine. She also is on the faculty of the Kent School of Social Work.

    UofL Day of Giving is a historic day in the life of the university. Card Nation will come together and stand with students, faculty and staff for this 24-hour giving campaign, Oct. 18, encouraging everyone to support areas most meaningful to them. The UofL Alumni Association will be live-streaming updates all day via social media.     Reminder about NCAA Athletics Compliance and UofL’s Commitment to Institutional Control

    UofL School of Dentistry offering orthodontics discount

    As you consider benefits such as FSA designations and dental insurance during open enrollment, now is the time for braces. The UofL School of Dentistry is offering a $250 discount off the regular price of orthodontic care through the end of February 2017. Orthodontic treatment for anyone 21 and younger is $3,500, the cost for those who are 22 and older is $3,900. This is at least 30 percent less than orthodontic treatment performed at other practices. The school accepts many dental insurance plans.

    School of Nursing degree programs open house

    Learn more about the undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered at the UofL School of Nursing during an open house. Faculty and student services staff members will host separate information sessions on the traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program, RN-to-BSN online program and Master’s Entry into Professional Nursing (MEPN) second degree program from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Information sessions on the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs will be from 7 to 8 p.m.

    CardShark Pitch event scheduled

    Are you familiar with the television show, Shark Tank? UofL has its own “CardShark” pitch tank event. It’s the final session of UofL’s “Trifecta” Translational Training program. This session has two parts: First, learn how to make your product idea attractive to potential partners, investors, and team members, and second, participate (or just watch) in a pitch-off in front of our panel of sharks.     Art Therapy Forum planned

    The Art Therapy program is hosting the annual Art Therapy Forum with a overview of the profession and a panel presentation of art therapists in the community.     Benefits Open Enrollment – options include Supplemental Life Insurance

    Keep in mind, supplemental life insurance is a benefit to review during annual open enrollment.  If you are currently enrolled in Supplemental Term Life, you may increase one level of coverage with no Statement of Health.  If not enrolled in Supplemental Term Life, you may elect additional coverage, a Statement of Health will be required.  Dependent and Spouse coverage will be offered, regardless of level of coverage, a Statement of Health will be required.     Benefits Open Enrollment – Flexible Spending Accounts

    If you want a Flexible Spending Account (FSA), you must enroll each year. Your 2016 voluntary FSA will not automatically roll over to 2017. FSAs allow you to set aside money for health care and/or dependent care with pre-tax dollars to pay for eligible health care and/or dependent care expenses. When you elect a health care FSA, your account is funded with preloaded dollars of your elected amount beginning January 1.  Your annual maximum contribution is $2,550. If you elect a dependent care FSA, you may contribute up to $5,000 a year (this is the maximum household contribution) through payroll deduction. Unused FSA funds are not returned to you.
