    Seventeen of the 40 people who made Business First’s “Forty Under 40” list have a tie to the University of Louisville. Some teach here; others are alumni or have other affiliations with UofL. Among those on the list, published in the Sept. 25 edition, are Dr. Eric Bednar, clinical assistant professor in the School of Dentistry; Mark Jurich, senior associate athletic director for development; and Dr. Gerald Lee, assistant professor of pediatrics and division chief, allergy and immunology.

    2.) ‘UofL Today with Mark Hebert’ features flu shots, presidential race

    Airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 6 p.m. on 93.9 FM The Ville; replayed on Saturday and Sunday at 8 a.m.

    UofL’s Mark Hebert hosts two weekly 30-minute programs focusing on research and insights from expert UofL faculty, as well as stories about our successful students, and staff and campus events. This week’s schedule:

    ·       Monday, Oct. 5: Dr. Michael Smith – Flu shot fact vs. fiction, research; Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Program – Errol Wint and two students; CEHD news conference – training future teachers to use drama to boost learning in pre-K students

    ·       Tuesday, Oct. 6: 2016 U.S. Presidential Race – Gary Gregg, McConnell Center director; Jasmine Farrier, political science professor; and Charlie Zimmerman, communications professor discuss The Donald, Hillary, Rand Paul and the rest of the presidential field and what they see happening in Kentucky.

    3.) Correction: 2015 Clery Report available

    The Annual Security and Fire Safety Report for 2015 is now available for viewing and/or printing here. (Corrects the link.) The report is completed each year in compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (Clery Act).

    4.) Lab Safety and Hazardous Waste training

    Oct. 8, 9 a.m. – noon, Room 2034, KWING

    Free

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend this training. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years and may be completed in Bioraft (online refresher training). Bring employee/student ID number to sign in. Attendees can pre-register at www.louisville.edu/dehs, however advanced registration is not required.

    5.) New Critical Thinking tools available on Blackboard

    To support instructors regarding the university’s shared commitment to explicitly building students’ skills in critical thinking across the curriculum, the “Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools” booklet (aka “little blue book”)is now in all Blackboard shells.  Instructors can find a pdf of the booklet and an instructional strategy tipsheet under the new tab marked “University Resources.”  Using the Blackboard copy command, instructors can copy the booklet into any Blackboard content area.

    6.) PLAN offers workshop on developing teaching philosophy statements

    Oct. 7, 2 to 3 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    Teaching philosophy statements offer an opportunity for self-reflection, provide a means of communication with one’s students, and are increasingly a requirement in academic job applications. This workshop will allow you the opportunity to reflect upon your philosophical approach to teaching and learning by comparing and responding to sample teaching philosophy statements. Graduate students interested in attending can register and find more information on the PLAN website.

    8.) Free training continues Tuesday: Commercializing Innovations in the Healthcare Market

    All are invited to attend the new Trifecta Training Program for Life Science Technologies. The fourth of five weekly training sessions is open to the UofL community and will be held on Tuesday (10/6), 4 – 6 p.m. in Room 123 of the CTRB. These sessions are designed to help you prepare Coulter, ExCITE and I-Corps applications as well as other translational grant opportunities. Experienced speakers will present topics related to health-based innovations and entrepreneurship.
