    1.) Open Enrollment runs through Oct. 31

    During the open enrollment period, employees can make changes to and enroll in a number of benefits, including health, dental and vision; health care and dependent care flexible spending accounts; and Get Healthy Now. All benefit elections will be made online and are effective January 1, 2015. Benefits fairs featuring representatives from benefit providers will be held on the HSC campus (CTR Building, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Oct. 21 and 22, and on Belknap campus (HR, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) Oct. 28 and 29.     2.) Sustainability Week starts today

    Engage in planetary and social justice during UofL’s 5th annual Sustainability Week. It kicks off Monday, Oct. 20, with Weigh the Waste from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at The Ville Grill; a Campus Sustainability Tour leaving the Cultural Center at 2 p.m.; and Community Engagement Awards in Ekstrom Library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 21, features a tree planting and tour at noon, plus a carbon-neutral soccer match at 7 p.m. at Lynn Stadium. The Campus Sustainability Day fair will be on the Quad Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with free document, disk and video recycling at the Shred-It truck at College of Business.

    3.) Save the date: Inaugural ‘Feast on Equality’ 5K run is Nov. 8

    Nov. 8, race starts 8 a.m. at Hogan’s Fountain in Cherokee Park

    $25 registration fee

    The Feast on Equality raises money for the UofL LGBT Center. Join us for the first “Feast on Equality” 5K run presented by Humana Vitality and Humana Values. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced runner, this 5K is for you! Many LGBT students lose family and financial support when they come out of the closet, and are at greater risk of dropping out. The LGBT Center works to strengthen and sustain an inclusive campus community at the university.

    4.) Lunch & Learn: Healthy habits for better hearing and balance

    6.) Meet the A&S Inclusion and Equity interns

    Oct. 31, 2:30 to 3:30 p.m., 139 Shumaker Research Bldg.

    The A&S Inclusion and Equity internship program is designed to expose a team of students to the scholarship and best practices concerning inclusiveness and equity, with the purpose of cultivating social justice leadership skills among college students. Please drop by during this hour to visit various intern-led stations to engage in activities and dialogue with the A&S Inclusion and Equity interns. This event is informal and attendance is welcome anytime during this hour.

    7.) One-act play links 1954 events in Louisville to 2014 events in Ferguson

    Oct. 24, 7 p.m., Brandeis School of Law, Allen Courtroom

    Free, open to the public

    Based on conversations with members of the Louisville community, court transcripts from Carl Braden’s sedition trial, and Anne Braden’s memoir, The Wall Between, this one-act play addresses issues of race, media, and policing to link events of 1954 in Louisville with events in Ferguson, Missouri, today. Directed by Amy Steiger. Co-sponsored by theatre arts, Brandeis School of Law and Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research.

    8.) PLAN hosts workshop on applying for fellowships and grants

    Oct. 21, noon to 1 p.m., Nursing/Public Health, Room 2035, K-Wing

    At some time in your career, it is likely that you will want to secure funding for your research or a special project that you want to undertake. This workshop will look at the marketplace of funding opportunities and some of the basics you need to know to navigate that marketplace and successfully compete for those funds.     9.) PLAN hosts workshop on diversity in the classroom, ways to detect subtle discrimination

    Oct. 24, 2 to 3 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    Teachers often struggle with addressing culturally insensitive comments, or microaggressions, in the classroom. This workshop introduces teachers to the concept of microaggressions and how it impacts students. You will reflect on your own cultural identities and assumptions about diversity and will be provided with empirically based strategies for how to address microaggressive statements.     10.) Writing Center staff to host workshop on writing for publication

    Oct. 27, 2 to 3 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    Writing for publication is a challenging but vital part of graduate students’ professional development. This workshop will cover the process of writing for publication and the differences between writing for graduate courses and for publication. We will also discuss practical concerns, such as identifying a publication for your work, responding to reviewer comments, and revising your work for publication.     11.) Grad Student Council Research Symposium: Deadline for proposals extended

    Deadline for proposals Oct. 22; event Nov. 14

    The Graduate Student Council and the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies invite graduate students to submit abstracts for presentations at the 6th Semi-Annual Graduate Research Symposium on Nov. 14. Abstracts for posters or 10- to 12-minute paper presentations on any stage of research will be considered. The deadline to submit a proposal has been extended to October 22. Graduate students interested in applying can find the submission form and more information on the GSC website.

    12.) Attend DEHS lab safety and hazardous waste training

    Oct. 21, 9 to 11:45 a.m., Ekstrom Library, Room W104

    Recently hired lab employees who work with chemicals should attend the Lab Safety/Hazardous Waste session, 9 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. Recurrent training for lab employees is required every three years. Individuals who will work with or around radioactive materials should attend the Radiation Safety Orientation session, which is from 11:15 a.m. to noon. Bring employee/student ID number to sign in.

    14.) Register early for the Women’s Empowerment Luncheon

    Registrations are being accepted through Nov. 7 for the Women’s Center’s annual Women’s Empowerment Luncheon. The guest speaker will be Alice K. In addition, there will be presentations of the Tachau Gender Equity Award; Nichols Professional Development Award and the Women Center Empowerment Award.

    Ideas to Action maintains an online inventory of faculty and staff presentations and publications related to their work. They have catalogued 120 presentations and papers on critical thinking, community engagement and CUEs, and they invite you to add your i2a-related work.

    16.) Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Study for Children and Adolescents aged 10 to 17 years

    The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the metabolism, as well as safety, of a medication in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with type 2 Diabetes. If the child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will attend three clinic visits; receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost.     17.) Autism study for children 4 to less than 8 years old

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEGs without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.     18.) Research study for nausea/vomiting after a dcheduled durgery, birth through 17 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting.  Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation.  Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.     19.) Pain study, infants and toddlers, less than 2 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate acetaminophen given into a vein to treat moderate to severe pain in infants and children less than 2 years of age following surgery or an injury. Subjects may be compensated for time/travel. IRB #12.0228

    20.) Pediatric pain study, 7 through 16 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain.  Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation.  Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study. IRB #12.0192
