DID YOU KNOW?
The 3,194-pipe Steiner-Reck organ inside the School of Music’s Comstock Hall was designed specifically for North German Baroque pieces. The keys are made of African pear wood and the pipes are Honduran mahogany and South African copper. Only in Honduras do mahogany trees grow large enough for the tall pipes, and, at the time of construction, South Africa was the only country that made copper in sheets long enough to ensure no pipe seams. The organ cost $375,000 in 1980 and is the largest of its kind in the Midwest.
