    Larry Rohter, former New York Times South America bureau chief and author of “Brazil on the Rise,” will discuss Brazil’s historic election between two women representing dramatically different forces within modern Brazil. President Dilma Rouseff, the first female president of Brazil, faces challenger Marina Silva, who, if elected, would be the first woman of color to be president of Brazil.

It’s important that your in-network doctor always refers you to in-network providers if you are in need of other medical services, such as laboratory work or referral to a specialist.     UofL Libraries is proud to present a new app to help people find artworks on campus. The app allows you to sort art pieces by type, such as painting, sculpture, and drawing, as well as get walking directions to their location on campus. Find the app at http://uofl.me/campus-art.

    This multimedia presentation will explore how presidents use athletics to bolster their public image.     9.) Keeping the PEACC

    How can we recognize warning signs of sexual assault, stalking or dating violence? What do the resources look like? What responsibilities do you have to respond? How can you proactively endorse UofL’s Green Dot Bystander Campaign? This semester the PEACC (Prevention Education Advocacy on Campus and in the Community) Program is offering a session that offers some practical solutions to these questions. Join us to learn more about how you can become a PEACC liaison in your department.

    10.) How to managing a troubled employee

    Oct. 15, 1:30 p.m., Human Resources 103A

    Free

    How do you reverse a performance problem and keep an employee’s problem from becoming a problem for you and your organization. This workshop is designed to educate leaders, supervisors and managers to learn to assess when and how problems need to be dealt with. Participants will also learn how to help employees begin to recognize their own problems and how to work effectively toward resolving them.

    11.) HR needs mentors

    We are gearing up for the 2015 Provost’s Staff Leadership Academy. As a component of this program, participants will meet with a mentor periodically throughout their nine months in the program. Mentoring is an important piece of the program because it provides additional opportunities for participants to learn about leadership. Please consider volunteering your experience and expansive skill set to this important program.

    12.) Safety data sheets and hazard communication reminder

    Safety Data Sheets (a.k.a. MSDS) received by UofL departments should not be forwarded to the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (DEHS), but should be retained in the work area along with the chemical inventory for every employee to have access. It is the responsibility of each department to make hazard information and chemical inventory available to employees, as DEHS does not do this for you. See link for more information.

     

    13.) Reminder to sign up for the Family and Friends Campus Visit Program

    14.) Save the date for PLAN’s part-time student focus group event

    Nov. 13, 4 to 6 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    The School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies is seeking part-time graduate students from across all disciplines to get opinions on refining the PLAN program based on this group’s specific needs. If you are, have been, or will be a part-time grad student, please join us to give feedback about how to best meet the needs of part-time grad students. Dinner will be provided to attendees. Graduate students interested in attending can register and find more information on the PLAN website.

    15.) Graduate Student Council invites proposals for upcoming symposium

    Abstracts due Oct. 15; symposium Nov. 14

    The Graduate Student Council and the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies invite graduate students to submit abstracts for presentations at the 6th Semi-Annual Graduate Research Symposium on November 14. Abstracts for posters or 10- to 12-minute paper presentations on any stage of research will be considered and are due on October 15. Graduate students interested in applying can find the submission form and more information on the GSC website.
