1.) Axton Reading Series presents Tony Hoagland

The English department presents Tony Hoagland for the final reading of the Fall 2013 Axton Reading Series. Hoagland’s four collections of poems include, “What Narcissism Means to Me” and “Donkey Gospel.” He is also the author of a book on poetic craft and art, “Real Sofistikashun.” Hoagland will read from his own work on Thursday night and host a master class the following morning from 10 a.m. to noon in room 300, Bingham Humanities Building.

2.) Renaissance English music concert

The UofL Early Music Ensemble presents “Welcome Sweet Pleasure,” a concert of Renaissance English music. The program, featuring a variety of Renaissance instrumental groups (recorders, violas da gamba, lute and cittern) as well as a 20-member chorus, is the final official program for its director, Jack Ashworth, who will retire in December.

Join us for UofL Department of Medicine Grand Rounds featuring Jeffrey P. Callen, MD, professor of medicine and chief, division of dermatology. Callen will present “Recalcitrant Dermatoses: What Lessons Can We Learn?,” focusing on recognizing the need to confirm a diagnosis, assessing the likelihood of a therapeutic response and identifying the reasons why therapies do not work.

Horseshoes for Hope

Horses and Hope invites the university community to decorate a horseshoe to raise money and awareness for Horses and Hope, a breast cancer initiative of the Office of the First Lady and the Kentucky Cancer Program. The goal is to work with the state’s equine industry to identify new opportunities to provide breast cancer awareness, education, early detection through screening and treatment referral, as well as to raise funds to sustain programs into the future.

12.) UofL undergraduate teams headed to national tournament for moot court
Two UofL undergraduate teams, both sponsored by the McConnell Center, earned bids to the American Collegiate Moot Court National Tournament after Elite 8 regional finishes this weekend in Orlando, Fla. UofL senior Sarah Stovall of Bowling Green, Ky., was ranked 18th orator out of a field of more than 100 competitors. Coached by McConnell Scholar alumnus Neil Salyer, the teams will compete Jan. 17-18 at Arizona State University. Additional information here.

The Department of Medicine, pulmonary division, will conduct several clinical research studies for subjects with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema, chronic bronchitis, asthma). In this McConnell Center talk, Barbara Perry, PhD, presidential historian and UofL alumna, will explore the origin and creation of the Kennedy image. In her best-selling biography, “Rose Kennedy: The Life and Times of a Political Matriarch,” Perry captures Rose Kennedy’s contributions to the Kennedy dynasty. Books will be available for a discounted price and a book signing will follow Perry’s remarks.
