    Support the annual UofL Cares campaign at the Department of Surgery’s two-day bake sale. UofL Cares is the annual community campaign that asks faculty and staff to support six local organizations, including the Fund for UofL.

    2.) Learn about Earth-tones: Art Quilts by Penny Sisto

    Penny Sisto, noted quilt artist and peace activist, will speak on her current exhibition at the Carnegie Center for Art and History. Sisto’s figurative textile art is noted for the variety of fabrics employed and for its affirmation of different peoples of the globe.

    3.) Glass artists/dealers to discuss changes in contemporary glass

    Free, but reservations are requested

    Glass artists Paul Day and Sibylle Peretti and glass art dealers Doug and Katya Heller of Heller Gallery in New York will discuss current changes in contemporary glass. Day and Peretti curated Remix, a show of original works they created in response to art from the Leight Collection. The Speed Art Museum is a member of UofL’s Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

    4.) Last day to fill out your HRA

    Nov. 17

    Today is the last day to go online and fill out the Health Risk Assessment form. To enroll in Get Healthy Now and earn the $40 monthly premium incentive in 2015, you must complete a new HRA today.

    5.) Wi-Fi connection issues with Apple OSX 10.10 (Yosemite)

    IT has received reports of users experiencing Wi-Fi connectivity issues after upgrading to OSX 10.10. The issue may occur while connected to any UofL or home Wi-Fi networks. Apple is working on a patch that will contain Wi-Fi and other updates, but the patch is currently in beta, it doesn’t have an estimated release date, and is not supported. For users planning to connect to Wi-Fi networks, IT recommends waiting to upgrade to OSX 10.10 until this issue is resolved.

    7.) PLAN offers workshop to help graduate students compose/revise resumes

    Nov. 18, 3 to 4:30 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    Non-faculty positions both inside and outside the academy often require a resume as opposed to a CV. This workshop will briefly review the basics of effective resume writing and provide an opportunity to receive feedback about your own resume. Even if your resume isn’t polished, no worries: now is a great time to start! Bring whatever you have and take advantage of this opportunity.     8.) PLAN offers workshop on developing and refining the elevator talk

    Nov. 21, 1 to 3 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105

    Whether you’re riding in an elevator with members of a job search committee or giving a formal presentation during your interview process, you’ll need to be prepared to talk about your areas of expertise. In this session, participants will learn how to share their knowledge and experience in 2 to 20 minutes and practice their elevator talks with students inside and outside their fields.     Curious about the academic job interview process? Come watch a graduate student be mock interviewed by professionals who regularly interview candidates. Following the interview, the professionals will share feedback with the group and the candidate and audience will have chance to ask questions.     10.) PLAN hosts workshop on creating digital assignments

    Nov. 19, 2 to 3 p.m., Bingham Humanities, Room 204

    Digital assignments in any discipline offer an opportunity for students to choose an appropriate genre and medium, to enhance their digital skills in academic environments, and to reflect on how their choices affect specific disciplinary audiences. In this workshop, you will consider how a digital assignment might benefit your classroom by seeing assignment examples and discussing them with other teachers.     14.) Type 2 diabetes mellitus study for children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years

    The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the metabolism, as well as safety, of a medication in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. If the child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will attend 3 clinic visits; receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost. Compensation available for time/travel.

    15.) Autism study for children 4 to less than 8 years old

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.

    16.) Research study for nausea and vomiting after a scheduled surgery, birth through 17 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting.  Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation.  Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.

    17.) Pain study, infants and toddlers, less than 2 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate acetaminophen given into a vein to treat moderate to severe pain in infants and children less than 2 years of age following surgery or an injury. Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.

    18.) Pediatric pain study, 7 through 16 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain.  Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation.  Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study.

    19.) Pediatric constipation study

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to assess the efficacy and safety of an investigational drug used to treat constipation. Children 6-17 years of age who have been diagnosed with functional constipation and are able to swallow capsules may be eligible to participate. Patients may be compensated for time/travel associated with their participation in the study.

Espejo is the author of The Time of Popular Sovereignty: Process and the Democratic State and Just Borders: Peoples Territories, and the Rights of Place.
