    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    Dentists from the UofL School of Dentistry are performing free oral health screenings today as part of a wholistic community health fair at Highlands Community Ministries. The event stresses the importance of overall health, and also includes HIV and diabetes testing, blood pressure screenings and shingles vaccinations as well as art therapy to alleviate stress and legal aid.

    1.) Sign up for the 24th Annual UofL Faculty/Staff Golf Scramble

    June 12, 1 p.m., Quail Chase Golf Club

    $55/person

    Teams may be requested or placed according to handicap. Shotgun start will be used. Entry fee includes greens fee, cart, skins game, team prizes, individual hole competitions, range balls and pre-round lunch provided by Sodexo Dining Services. Retirees and spouses invited. Event is limited to first 120 paid entries. Lunch will be served starting at check-in between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Entry deadline is June 5.

    2.) Get Healthy Now closed for Memorial Day holiday

    The Get Healthy Now Wellness Center will be closed Monday in observance of Memorial Day. Normal hours of operation will resume Tuesday, May 26, (6a – 9p). Have a safe and happy Memorial Day!

    5.) Advancement Systems offline May 22

    Due to a required system update, the Advance Web (AWA) systems will be offline from 8 a.m. until approximately 6 p.m. Friday. Users should not try to access the AWA system for updates or queries during this time. Upon completion, all regular users will be sent an email that all systems are upgraded and ready for use. We apologize for any inconvenience this offline period may cause.

    6.) Come to the Garden Commons workday

    May 20, noon to 2 p.m., Garden Commons

    Free

    Interested in learning more about organic gardening? Want to share new ideas in sustainable living? Join us today as we weed, water, plant, harvest and apply compost tea (an organic fertilizer and pesticide). No prior experience needed. Tools and gloves provided. Volunteers will be able to take home fresh herbs and yummy produce such as rhubarb, mint, lovage, thyme, sage, and fresh strawberries! We will also learn more about compost tea, how it’s made and its multiple benefits. ​

    7.) Green Tip: Sustainability on Tap

    UofL and the Louisville Water Co. are collaborating to educate students, faculty and staff on the value of getting back to the tap with events, guest lectures and water-filling station signs. Do you know where our drinking water comes from or the engineering behind it? Explore the political and global concerns around water or dive into marketing issues. Louisville Water’s story of science and public health brings real-world examples to the classroom and provides staff for guest lectures or tours.

    8.) Paid volunteers needed for UofL Caregiver Stress Study

    Make a quick $20! UofL Caregiver Stress Study is looking for healthy European American, 40 years and older who have NOT provided care for an ill friend or family member in the last year to fill out a questionnaire and provide saliva samples for up to three different time points. Each visit takes approximately one hour. We are offering $20 compensation for each visit.

    Please join us as we welcome Joshua Sparks, MD, who will present “Advanced Heart Failure in Adults with Congenital Heart Disease: A New Challenge.”  Dr. Sparks is an assistant professor, pediatric cardiology, UofL School of Medicine.

Her TBL course works to integrate the disciplines of pathology, microbiology and pharmacology with the clinical care of patients. She has developed and presented TBL faculty development seminars nationally and internationally.

    11.) Medicine: Dr. Kristine Krueger

    Medicine Grand Rounds features Kristine J. Krueger, MD, professor of medicine and chief of academic and clinical affairs, division of gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition, and assistant dean for administration at UofL. Dr. Krueger will present Management of C. difficile Infection, focusing on the epidemiology, pathogenesis and burden of C. difficile infection, an update on treatment options, and prevention strategies to mitigate risk.
