    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    It’s time! On July 1, the University of Louisville is officially joining the Atlantic Coast Conference! Our final installment highlighting the other 14 ACC schools looks at Wake Forest.

     

    Did you know … Wake Forest University, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, enrolled more than 7,400 students in 2012. It is an SAT/ACT-optional school, leaving it up to the applicant to decide whether he or she wants to submit their scores. Writer and poet Maya Angelou, who died May 28 at the age of 86, had been Wake Forest’s Reynolds Professor of American Studies, and her popular classes were notoriously difficult to get into.     Celebrate this historic moment as UofL officially joins the Atlantic Coast Conference. Come on down to Fourth Street Live! to watch the U.S. soccer team play Belgium at 4 p.m., with the ACC party immediately afterward. Hear from UofL coaches and special guests, grab some UofL fan giveaways, take selfies with ACC mascots, and enjoy music by The Louisville Crashers and DJ K-Dogg.

    2.) The First Oval Office Project

    Michael Ramsey will discuss the task of researching, documenting and recreating the wartime private office and sleeping marquee of General George Washington. The project is a partnership between the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and the Museum of the American Revolution. Locust Grove is a member of the Center for Arts and Culture Partnerships.

    5.) Autism study for children 4 to less than 8 years old

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). If a child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will receive the study medication or placebo and study-related care at no cost. Parents will be offered compensation for time/travel.     6.) Pediatric high blood pressure study, 6 through 11 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of an investigational drug used to treat high blood pressure. Children from 6 through 11 years of age diagnosed with high blood pressure may be eligible for participation. Subjects will be compensated for time/travel. IRB #10.0306

    7.) Research study for nausea and vomiting after a scheduled surgery, birth through 17 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting.  Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation.  Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.     8.) Pain study, infants and toddlers, less than 2 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate acetaminophen given into a vein to treat moderate to severe pain in infants and children less than 2 years of age following surgery or an injury. Subjects may be compensated for time/travel. IRB #12.0228

    9.) Adolescent fibromyalgia study, 12 to 17 years

    The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication being studied as a possible treatment for fibromyalgia. Adolescents ages 12 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia may be eligible for participation. If child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will attend seven clinic visits over a 17-week period. If qualified, child will receive the study medication or placebo (an inactive look-alike pill) and study-related care at no cost. Parents may be compensated for their time/travel. IRB # 10.0116

    10.) Pediatric pain study, 7 through 16 years

    The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain.  Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation.  Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study. IRB #12.0192

    11.) Type 2 diabetes mellitus study, 10 to 17 years

    The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the metabolism, as well as safety, of a medication in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. If the child qualifies to take part in this research study, he/she will attend 3 clinic visits; receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost. Compensation available for time/travel.  IRB #12.0380
