    Here’s what was posted to UofL Today on June 10, 2014:

     

    ·        VIDEO/PHOTOS: The McConnell Center is showing some of the nation’s most promising Army officers how to think strategically in an intensive seminar on Belknap Campus through June 28. The 31 soldiers attending are learning about leadership, international affairs, national security and more in the classroom and on local field trips. UofL is one of only two civilian universities in the nation offering the program this summer. Watch video here. See photos here.

    On July 1, the University of Louisville is joining the Atlantic Coast Conference! Between now and then, UofL Today will bring you a few tidbits every day about the 14 other ACC schools. Later, we will use this spot for daily morsels of information about UofL. Here we go!

    2.) Group bike commute: Cherokee to HSC

    June 12, 7:30 to 8 a.m., Cherokee Park parking area at Lexington and Cherokee Park roads

    Free

    Join Get Healthy Now and the Sustainability Council for a safe and easy bike commute along the Beargrass Creek Greenway and other designated bike routes. All experience levels welcome and all riders will receive a brief orientation. Participants must provide their own bicycle and accessories (helmet required), registration greatly appreciated.

    3.) Second round of Beer With a Scientist

    June 18, 8 p.m., Against the Grain Brewery, 401 E. Main St.

    Free admission

    Beer with a Scientist is a relaxed presentation of scientific information in language that any non-scientist will understand. Launched in May, the program is sponsored by Louisville Underground Science, an informally organized group made up of people who are “passionate about disseminating all things science to the general public of Louisville.” The second Beer with a Scientist program will feature the presentation, “They’re catchy; so how can we combat virus infection with nanotechnology?” by Jill M. Steinbach, a bioengineering researcher at UofL.

    Have you heard about EndNote? This citation management software formats citations in various styles, including APA and Chicago. EndNote’s compatibility with Microsoft Word allows you to format in-text citations and the bibliography when typing papers. Class is limited to 10.

    5.) Register now for the Louisville Symposium on Heart Disease in Women

    Event June 28, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Rudd Heart & Lung Center

    Physicians $100; Allied health professionals/nurses $50; community $25

    Open to the public

    This one-day conference organized by Dr. Kendra Grubb is the first of what is planned to be an annual event. It is designed to provide physicians, nurses, allied health professionals and the community with up-to-date information on the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease in women. Two dozen doctors are scheduled to speak.

    UofL department of medicine grand rounds features Vivek R. Sharma, MD, assistant professor of medicine at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center and UofL. Dr. Sharma will present Blue Blood and Bleeding Blues: A Review of Hemophilia, focusing on understanding hemostasis and the pathophysiology of hemophilia, recognizing the clinical features/complications of hemophilia and understanding the principles of managing hemophilia.

    7.) Neuroscience

    June 12, 8 to 9 a.m., School of Nursing 4th floor auditorium, Room 4003

    The department of neurosurgery is pleased to have Huey Y. Tien, MD, present Median Nerve Neuropathy for Neurosurgeons. Dr. Tien is a practicing physician at Kleinert Kutz Hand Care Center in Louisville. He’s also an associate clinical professor in the UofL department of surgery’s division of hand surgery.
