    1.) Several changes to purchasing, business entertaining policies in effect

    University policies for purchasing, business meals and entertainment have been updated as of Jan. 1. Among the changes are requirements that the Procard be used for entertainment and business meal expenses, prohibition of the use of university funds for personal events such as birthdays, and the creation of guidelines for tipping. For the full Business Meal/Entertainment policy, please click here.  There are also new procure-to-pay initiatives.  A summary of the changes can be found here.  One change, the elimination of Blanket POs, will take effect July 1.

    2.) University Writing Center offers services

    Writing Center staff members are available to come to your classrooms to give 10-minute presentations about the services we offer to students. We also lead workshops on the following topics: getting started; revising; editing; documenting in MLA, Chicago or APA styles; writing with sources; constructing an effective thesis statement; and writing the literature review.     4.) Nucleus offering LaunchIT training program for entrepreneurs

    Application due Jan. 30; program Thursdays from Feb. 19 to April 23, 6 to 9:15 p.m.

    Designed for researchers interested in having their innovations reach consumers through licensing to an existing company or through a startup, LaunchIt will provide framework to critically evaluate commercial potential of innovative products, services and the path to successfully reach the consumer. The EVPRI is offering a competitive opportunity to provide partial tuition reimbursement to UofL faculty/staff/students who successfully complete the program. Applications due Jan. 30.

    5.) Communication in English program begins Jan. 12

    Mondays beginning Jan. 12, 7 to 9:45 p.m.

    The IESL program is offering an evening class in the Spring 2015. The class is designed to help non-native speakers of English (high-intermediate to advanced proficiency) become more effective communicators in academic, professional and social situations. Class instruction focuses on conversational fluency and strategies for professional interactions.

    6.) Women’s Center forum to be held

    7.) Libraries’ Robotic Retrieval System to undergo preventative maintenance

    The Robotic Retrieval System located in Ekstrom Library will undergo quarterly preventive maintenance along with repairs Jan. 13 through Jan. 15. Patrons requesting items from the RRS may experience slow or delayed service due to the maintenance. Items that are delayed will be available that evening or the following morning.

    10.) Participants needed for a dental study

    School of Dentistry Periodontics Clinic

    The purpose of the study is to find out what bacterial genes are active in the mouth at the start of gingivitis (reversible gum disease). The study will involve four to six visits to the school over four to six weeks, during which time you will refrain from oral hygiene in one half of your mouth. The first and last visit will last 1½  to 2 hours. The other visits will last around 30 minutes. Participants will receive compensation in the form of a gift card.
