1.) ‘Dead Man Walking’ opens this week

Based on the bestselling book by Sr. Helen Prejean, this searing drama provides an eyewitness account of the death penalty in the U.S. as seen through the eyes of Sr. Helen Prejean, a Catholic nun who became the spiritual advisor of Mathew Poncelet, a convicted rapist and murderer. Written by Tim Robbins and directed by Russell Vandenbroucke.

2.) Trivia Night to benefit Kosair

$3 per player
Come help the Honors Student Council raise money for Kosair Children’s Hospital Pediatric Oncology Unit. Everyone is welcome. Simply show up and use teamwork to find the right answer. Questions could cover pop culture, literature, music, history, anything. The winning teams will receive gift cards to local businesses. Louisville Trivia, the city’s premier pub quiz provider, is hosting the event as their own donation. Please share the event with your friends. RSVPS not required, but would be appreciated.

4.) Green tip: TARC offers new option for southern Indiana commuters
Hoosiers have a new way to avoid the expense, hassle and pollution of driving to campus. TARC is launching an express route from Sellersburg today. Instead of wasting time and money stuck in traffic, commuters can take Route 65X free with UofL ID from a park and ride lot at Ivy Tech Community College (I-65 Exit 9) and enjoy TARC’s efficient new coaches with free Wi-Fi, outlets and overhead storage. The service stops at Health Sciences Center (Chestnut and Jackson) and connects to other TARC routes (i.e. Route 18 to Belknap Campus). 5.) Spreadsheets and 424s for NIH salary cap and R01, R03 and R21 modular submissions
The Department of Medicine has spreadsheets and pre-filled 424 forms for R01, R03 and R21 modular submissions, including the new NIH salary cap of $181,500. The spreadsheets also calculate PCF and NIH budget info, and the Additional Narrative Justification for exclusions to F&A and modular differences. The updated spreadsheets are available here.

6.) Nomination period is open for President’s Distinguished Faculty Awards
Deadline: March 4
Nominations are requested for the 2014 Distinguished Faculty Awards. The annual awards honor faculty who bring distinction to UofL through their commitment to service, teaching, outstanding scholarship, research and creative activity. Submit nominations to your school’s unit committee or dean’s office by March 4. Award winners will receive a medallion and a check for $1,000 at the awards ceremony during the fall semester. 2014 award guidelines are located here.

Please participate in an anonymous study to measure “love actions” identified as self-compassion, self-forgiveness, self-esteem, spirituality, forgiveness, empathy, sympathy, altruistic values, compassion and compassionate love. The survey takes 15-20 minutes to complete. You will be provided with a report on your level of “love actions” on each of the constructs. Please click here to access the survey.
9.) Pediatric high blood pressure study, 6 through 11 years of age

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital will conduct a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of an investigational drug used to treat high blood pressure. Children from 6 through 11 years of age diagnosed with high blood pressure may be eligible for participation. Subjects will be compensated for time/travel. 10.) Research study for nausea and vomiting after a scheduled surgery, birth through 17 years

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital will conduct a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting. Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation. Subjects may be compensated for time/travel. If your child is scheduled or being scheduled for surgery, please call 629-5820 or 620-0000 (pager) to speak to study personnel or email carich01@louisville.edu.
11.) Pain study for infants and toddlers less than 2 years

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate acetaminophen given into a vein to treat moderate to severe pain in infants and children less than 2 years of age following surgery or an injury. 12.) Adolescent fibromyalgia study, 12 to 17 years

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational medication being studied as a possible treatment for fibromyalgia. Adolescents ages 12 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia may be eligible to participate. If qualified, the child will receive the study medication or placebo (an inactive look-alike pill) and study-related care at no cost. Parents may be compensated for their time/travel.
