    James Guthrie was president of UofL during the Civil War era, and was also president of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. During the war, Guthrie let the U.S. Army use the railroad, which was a vital supply line.

    1.) Hydrostatic weighing available at a reduced rate

    The Fitness Evaluation Program is offering a special for the remainder of the month of January on hydrostatic weighing: two tests for $40 (these are regularly priced at $25 per test for students and employees). This is one of the most accurate methods of body composition assessment available, and is exclusively available here at the University Fitness Evaluation Program.

    2.) Watch for this latest phishing scam

    Information Technology has received reports regarding a new phishing scam sent by email to university account holders. If you receive a notice stating, “Your tax return was incorrectly filled out,” please delete it immediately. Never give out your personal information or password. When you receive a suspicious email like this, send it as an attachment to secureit@louisville.edu to confirm its legitimacy prior to responding.

    3.) Attend the 6th Annual Center on Race and Inequality King Justice Lecture

    Jan. 21, 7 to 9 p.m., Strickler Hall, Middleton Auditorium

    Free, open to the public

    The Center on Race and Inequality King Justice Lecture provides university and community members with the opportunity to listen to and engage with leading scholar activists working towards social justice. The Rev. Osagyefo Sekou will deliver this year’s lecture. Sekou is an author, public intellectual and the pastor for formation and justice at the First Baptist Church in Jamaica Plain, Boston. This event is affiliated with Project Progress, and sponsored by the Department of Pan-African Studies.

    4.) Give blood at the annual IT Bleeding Edge of Technology blood drive

    Jan. 21, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Miller IT Center, Bigelow Hall

    Please make plans to donate much needed blood at IT’s Annual Bleeding Edge of Technology blood drive. To register, please contact Victoria Harpe at 852-4308. The need is constant. The gratification is instant.

    5.) Children ages 3 to 12 needed for thinking and learning study

    The UofL KID lab is investigating how children of different ages think about information, people and objects. Participation involves a visit of 30 minutes or less to the lab on the Belknap campus. Children receive t-shirts and other prizes for participating. IRB 14.0053.

    6.) Engaged Scholarship in Action series begins with infectious disease discussion

    Free

    Sponsored by the Office of the Provost, a panel discussion titled “Infectious Disease and Globalization: From HIV to Ebola and Beyond” will be the first in a series called Engaged Scholarship in Action. The discussion features brief faculty presentations about community-engaged work on the topic, followed by conversation on how interdisciplinary efforts might lead to more effective collaborations and positive community outcomes. Light lunch served. Panelists: Stephen Hanson (Philosophy), Muriel Harris (SPHIS), Mark Rothstein (Medicine, Law), Riann Van Zyl (Social Work) If you are an engaged scholar or interested in the topic, please join us!
