Monday, Feb. 19: Students from the UofL School of Dentistry gave free check-ups to hundreds of JCPS elementary school students, several of whom had never been to a dentist.

This week: UofL has received a half million dollar grant from the NSA to train students and police agencies how to deal with cybersecurity issues. Adel Elmaghraby, Michael Losavio and Adrian Lauf discuss. Barbara Polivka and Ander Flynn did a study on how many hospital nurses are using their smartphones for work and how they are using them.
 

Miscellaneous

Louisville Water Co.’s work in front of Ernst Hall will take place Feb. 24 weekend

During the weekend of Feb. 24-25, the Louisville Water Co. will be making the new-tie in for the 12-inch water main in front of Ernst Hall. This outage is going to affect all the buildings at Speed School (all buildings south of Eastern Parkway). The tentative “water outage” time is 4:30 p.m. Feb. 24 through midday Sunday. After the outage, an 18-hour “boil water advisory” will be in effect for drinking water only. Toilets and hand washing sinks will be available during the boil water advisory. More details will be shared once they are finalized.

raiseRED needs food donations

raiseRED, the 18-hour dance marathon Feb. 23-24, is looking to faculty and staff to help them round up some snack items for the dancers and families.A sponsor backed out last minute and the event is now in need of snacks such as granola bars, chips, packaged baked goods and more. We are asking that the faculty and staff of UofL bring in snack items to help us feed our dancers and keep them fundraising at the event. If you are able to help, please email operations to discuss where they can be dropped off. raiseRED volunteers can also pick them up. Cash will be accepted. A table will be set up Thursday from 5-8 p.m. in the SAC for donation drop offs as well.

Cap and Gown Ordering for May 2018 Commencement

The ordering website is open for faculty and students to place an order for academic apparel for the May 2018 Commencement Ceremonies. The deadline to order apparel is Saturday, March 31 at midnight. Graduation participants should visit the commencement website for information on the ceremony and to place a cap and gown order.

UofL medical students, faculty and staff to shave heads today for raiseRED

Medical students, faculty and staff with the University of Louisville School of Medicine will be getting their heads shaved on Feb. 19 to benefit RaiseRED, a UofL student effort to help fight pediatric cancer. Students have been raising funds individually in advance of Monday’s “RaiseRED’s Shaved Heads” event, which will take place from noon to 2 p.m. in the UofL Health Sciences Center Auditorium, 500 S. Preston St. Last year, $4,000 was raised at the first RaiseRED’s Shaved Heads event, where 12 students shaved their head, with several others donating their hair for wigs for cancer patients.  Donations for RaiseRED’s Shaved Heads can be made on the event page here or by attending Monday’s event. Members of the public who would like to attend or participate are encouraged to email to ensure enough barbers.

Nominate an older adult living life to the fullest for the 2018 Gold Standard Award for Optimal Aging

Do you know someone 85 years or older who is an outstanding example of what it means to age well? Nominate them for the Gold Standard Award for Optimal Aging, an award given by the UofL Institute for Sustainable Health & Optimal Aging. This award recognizes adults of 85 years or older and who are outstanding models of optimal aging in the following four categories: physical, social, spiritual and creative. Nominations are due April 15 and can be made online. 

Social Justice Consortium releases call for applications for 2018 PhD Research Fellow

The Cooperative Consortium for Transdisciplinary Social Justice Research invites PhD students to apply for its 2018 Graduate Research Fellowship. The Research Fellow will work in close consultation with the Research Manager, faculty researchers, and other student research fellows. The fellow will support various transdisciplinary social justice research teams that include representatives from a wide array of academic disciplines and community partners. Safe Zone Ally Training for faculty and staff

Join the LGBT Center for Safe Zone Ally training. During the 2-hour session, participants will hear from LGBT students, learn about issues that impact LGBT people, and reflect on what actions you can take to help improve the lives of LGBT people.
