1.) International Banquet to take participants on ‘Global Cruise’

The American International Relations Club is proud to present the 2014 International Banquet, Global Cruise. Enjoy international cuisine and performances. Tickets can be purchased at the International Center, second floor, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday.

2.) International Film Series offers four movies in four days

The eighth annual International Film Series, sponsored by the Department of Communication and the Institute for Intercultural Communication, will feature four films from four countries in four days beginning Sunday. Moderated discussions and refreshments will follow each film. The schedule is “My Time Will Come,” Ecuador, Feb. 23; “1942: A Love Story,” India, Feb. 24; “Metropolis,” Japan, Feb. 25; “Bamako,” Mali, Feb. 26.

3.) COB hosts Walmart Better Living Business Plan Challenge

Free, public
Teams of students from six universities in the Midwest will pitch their “sustainable” business ideas in this regional competition hosted by the College of Business. Think “Shark Tank” goes green. Presenting teams are from UofL, Cleveland State University, University of Arkansas, University of Texas at Austin, Vanderbilt University and Washington University. The winner goes on to Walmart headquarters in Benton, Ark., to compete in the finals for up to $15,000 in business start-up cash.

4.) Brown bag lunch to focus on caregiving and self-advocacy

Following up on the Great Places to Work/Get Healthy Now workshop, “Caregiving and a System of Support: Tips for Self-Advocacy,” please join us for an informal brown bag discussion as a way for those caring for a grand/child, parent, relative or friend to build our UofL network of support.

5.) KCP bring mobile mammography screening to Belknap Campus
9 a.m. – 4 p.m. April 9, Gottschalk Circle on Belknap Campus (next to Shumaker Research Building)
UofL employees, age 40 and over. Insurance, Medicare or Medicaid will be billed. UofL insurance covers 100 percent.
Is it time for your annual mammogram? If so, you’re in luck. UofL’s Kentucky Cancer Program is pleased to bring the mobile mammography van back to Belknap Campus for women 40 years old and over. Mammograms will be provided by UofL Hospital and the James Graham Brown Cancer Center. UofL Women’s Center will also be on site with information. UofL insurance will cover 100 percent of the mammogram cost. Call today for your appointment, 852-6318.

8.) Credit card and payroll deduction now available for faculty/staff SRC memberships
Faculty and staff wishing to join the new Student Recreation Center will be able to do so either by using a credit card or by payroll deduction beginning Monday, Feb. 24. Those wishing to join may stop by the Intramural Office, located in the lobby of the Student Recreation Center (SRC), between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. weekdays to start their memberships. Memberships for faculty and staff are $22/month and are available in blocks of three, six, nine or 12 months at a time.

9.) University Writing Center calls for submissions for student art exhibition
All UofL students are invited to submit 2D, 3D, or video entries inspired in some manner by the theme “Writing in the World.” Selected artwork will be featured at a March 26 exhibition hosted by the University Writing Center. All artwork must be submitted to Gabrielle Mayer of the Department of Fine Arts by March 17. Please visit the University Writing Center website for submission and event details.

10.) UofL faculty member, colon cancer survivor shares his story
March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that screening can prevent colon cancer or find it early when treatment is most effective? UofL faculty member and colon cancer survivor David Britt, PhD, is encouraging everyone age 50 and over to be screened for colon cancer. See his story here. The Partnership for a Green City seeks nominations for the Joan Riehm Memorial Environmental Leadership Award (nomination form.) 12.) Generating student discussion: Blank stares and awkward silences

In this interactive “discussion about discussions,” join your faculty colleagues as we explore the strengths and limitations of using discussion as part of one’s teaching practice. We will identify the characteristics of successful classroom discussions and share resources and tips for establishing ground rules that clarify student and faculty responsibilities in a discussion. Henry Bohler Jr., MD, associate professor, division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Women’s Health, UofL School of Medicine, presents “OncoFertility.” He will discuss the impact of different cancer therapies on female fertility and options for fertility preservation in females treated for cancer, as well as the initial counseling in cancer survivors interested in fertility preservation.
