Get Healthy Now is partnering with the American Heart Association in the fight against heart disease. We are offering free blood pressure checks, a City Café smoothie station, stress balls, health tips, heart healthy recipes, and fresh fruit. Screenings take less than 2 minutes.     2.) Introducing: The Geoffrey P. Herzig Memorial Symposium

    The Geoffrey P. Herzig Memorial Symposium will be held on April 8-9, 2016 at the Jewish Hospital Rudd Heart & Lung Conference Center. The symposium will include multiple guest and faculty speakers. This event is free with a light breakfast, lunch, and snacks provided to all attendees.     3.) Statewide tornado drill scheduled

    Feb. 23, 10:07 a.m., all campuses

    The Statewide Tornado Drill will be held on Tuesday, February 23 at 10:07 a.m. The UofL Alert system will be activated to test our notification system, but buildings will not be conducting actual drills. To ensure that faculty and staff know what to do during tornado warnings, UofL has developed a training presentation that can be viewed online. Please review this presentation to be prepared for tornados whether on campus and at home.

    4.) Seminar planned on automatic identification and quantification of diabetes-related retinal pathology using spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) images

    Dr. Shlomit Schaal, MD, PhD, will be presenting this seminar. She is a clinician-scientist and a vitreo-retinal surgeon specializing in the surgical and medical management of complex vitreo-retinal diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment and retinal vascular diseases.     Dr. Angela Storey will be presenting this seminar as a part of the UofL Anthropology Department’s Job Talk Series. Dr. Storey is a candidate for Anthropology’s faculty cluster hire in the Environment and Sustainability. Free lunch will be provided, featuring sandwiches from Cake Flour. The final seminar in the series will be held Monday Feb. 29th at noon.

    Grand Rounds

    9.) UofL infectious diseases experts to present grand rounds on Zika virus

    February 18, 8 a.m., Auditorium of University of Louisville Hospital, a part of KentuckyOne Health. Enter through Ambulatory Care Building, 550 S. Jackson St.

    Faculty members from the UofL School of Medicine will provide an update on Zika virus for local health-care providers. The experts will discuss the disease’s origins, spread, associations with birth defects and neurological disease, transmission, symptoms, management, and prevention strategies in a Grand Rounds presentation. Speakers include Anupama Raghuram, MD, assistant professor of medicine and associate director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program, and Ruth L. Carrico, PhD, associate professor of infectious diseases in the School of Medicine, clinical director of the Vaccine and International Travel Center, and founding associate director of the Global Health Initiative.

    Lori Caloia, MD, and Eli Pendleton, MD, of UofL Family & Geriatric Medicine, will present Introduction to Care of the Transgender Person. In their presentation, Drs. Caloia and Pendleton will outline terminology used in care of the Transgender Person, identify health disparities that affect the Transgender Population, and describe Gender-Affirming treatment options.
