The International Association of the Study of Popular Music Association-US Conference will be held Feb. 19 to 21 at various locations including Chao Auditorium and the Humanities Building on the UofL Belknap Campus, the Muhammad Ali Center, Decca and The New Vintage. IASPM gathers scholars from around the world and across academic disciplines to examine the many ways musical expression shapes our identities, communities and lives: from Louisville to Nairobi; in jazz and in J-Pop; among amateur home organ players and virtuosic percussionists. Starting at the Muhammad Ali Center, the conference features three days of roundtable discussions, panel presentations, and keynote speakers and live music at The New Vintage.

3.) Arctic explorer Lonnie Dupre to speak at PJCS

Louisville Sports Performance is excited to welcome back arctic explorer Lonnie Dupre. Dupre recently returned from Mt. McKinley (Denali) in Alaska, where he became the first person to successfully complete a solo summit of North America’s highest mountain in the month of January. In this unique and special event, athletes, coaches and students will have a chance to meet Dupre and learn about his incredible lessons of overcoming obstacles, extreme endurance, perseverance and mental toughness.

6.) PLAN offers workshop on creating equitable expectations as an instructor
Feb. 17, noon to 1 p.m., Houchens Building, Room 105
The School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies (SIGS) invites graduate students to participate in a six-session series on navigating their own and their students’ diversity identities in academic settings. This session will focus on the needs and experiences of non-traditional college students and ask participants to consider effective ways of accommodating these students in the classroom. 7.) PLAN hosts workshop on formatting and submitting the dissertation or thesis

This workshop is for students writing (or anticipating writing) a dissertation, thesis, or a similar project for which a copy will need to be submitted to the School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies. Participants will learn how to implement the university’s submission guidelines about format, layout, etc. Grad students interested in attending can register and find more info on the PLAN website.

8.) HSC Webinar on new NIH Biosketch Format

This taped webinar on the keys to writing a compelling scientific narrative will cover which accomplishments to include and what not to mention. Learn how to highlight your most important work without sounding self-serving and the basic components of a solid narrative. Early investigators are likely not to have a long track record for the narrative, therefore, your presenter will cover career-stage specific aspects of the narrative that tell your story in a unique way. 9.) Call for summer research projects – School of Medicine
Summer research projects are now being solicited from faculty to submit a biomedical summer research project for our medical students. The student’s stipend support and poster production costs are covered by the School of Medicine’s Summer Research Scholar Program (SRSP) and NIH training grants. 11.) PKU study for 18 to 70 year olds

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and tolerability of a medication in 18 to 70 year olds who have a diagnosis of PKU with a high Phe level. If the patient qualifies to take part in this research study, involvement lasts from 27 to 44 weeks with up to 15 study visits. They will receive the study medication and study-related care at no cost. Compensation available for time/travel.

12.) Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Study for Adolescents and Adults aged 12 to 35 years

The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety of an experimental medication in 12 to 35 years olds who have recently been diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. If the subject qualifies to take part in this research study, participation lasts up to 2 years; he/she will receive the study medication or a placebo and study-related care at no cost . The Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit and the Wendy L. Novak Diabetes Care Center are conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the metabolism, as well as safety, of a medication in children and adolescents aged 10 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate how a medication treats abnormal EEG’s without seizures, as well as behavioral and neurological symptoms, in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety and dose response of a drug given orally prior to a scheduled surgery that is used to prevent post-operative nausea and vomiting. Children from birth to 17 years of age may be eligible for participation. Subjects may be compensated for time/travel.

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a clinical research study to evaluate the safety, pharmacokinetics and efficacy of an investigational drug used to treat moderate to severe prolonged or persistent pain. Children 7 to less than 17 years of age who require continuous analgesia for moderate to severe pain for an extended period of time may be eligible for participation. Patients will be reimbursed for reasonable travel costs associated with their participation in the study.

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit is conducting a clinical research study to assess the efficacy and safety of an investigational drug used to treat constipation. Children 6-17 years of age who have been diagnosed with functional constipation and are able to swallow capsules may be eligible to participate. 19.) Return to the Land of the Dragons

Michael Moryc, photographer and U.S. Army veteran, will discuss his return to Vietnam 40 years after his service there. He will share his lessons learned and provide a memorable and fascinating look at Vietnam today. This is a story of healing, closure and transformation for a country and two friends who find themselves on a journey of profound and humbling implications. It is also an uplifting story of hope for anyone who may be suffering with PTSD.
