    DID YOU KNOW?

     

    Kentucky’s official tree is the tulip poplar. On Belknap Campus, a tulip poplar grows near Patterson Hall and is part of the campus tree tour. The tree is also known as the tulip tree, tulip tree magnolia, whitewood and canoewood. Native Americans used the trunk of the tulip tree for dugout canoes.

    5.) President’s Distinguished Faculty Awards nomination period is open

    Nominations are requested for the 2016 Distinguished Faculty Awards. The annual awards honor faculty who bring distinction to UofL through their commitment to service, teaching, outstanding scholarship, research and creative activity. Submit nominations to your school’s unit committee or dean’s office by March 4. Award winners will receive a medallion and a check for $1,000 at the awards ceremony during the fall semester. 2016 award guidelines are located here.

    6.) Call for Nominations for Annual Student Awards

    The deadline for submitting nominations for outstanding students is March 1. All nominees will be celebrated at the Student Awards program on April 19. Faculty and staff who are advisers for a student organization can also be recognized as Advisor of the Year.

    15.) PLAN offers workshop on finding post doc positions for graduate students

    3 p.m. – 5 p.m. Feb. 16 Room 100, Clinical Translational Research Building

    In most STEM-related disciplines, a period of postdoctoral training is expected after a student earns their PhD degree. What are the expectations? How long should a post-doc last? And importantly, what should you look for and how do you find that perfect post-doc position? These questions and other questions will be addressed as we examine the sometimes mysterious world of post-doctoral training.     16.) Immigration: A Case for Free Trade in Labor

    The John H. Schnatter Center for Free Enterprise presents Dr. Benjamin Powell, author & Director of the Free Market Institute, Texas Tech University. Dr. Powell will present evidence to dispel popular fears about immigration. He will discuss how greater flows of immigration have the potential to substantially increase world income, reduce poverty and enhance the wealth of natives born in the destination countries,while doing little to harm job prospects or wages of the native born population.

    17.) Participants needed for autism & hearing study

    Communicative Disorders, MDA Building

    The University of Louisville’s Division of Communicative Disorders is investigating new hearing tests for individuals with autism. We are currently recruiting participants between the ages of 7 and 17 years of age who have received a diagnosis of autism. Participants are asked to listen to sounds or speech over headphones and provide a response. The study takes approximately 1.5 hours and eligible participants will receive a $20 gift card for their participation.

    18.) Childhood Obesity in Children 10 to less than 14 years

    IRB #13.0334 The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Kosair Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to evaluate the effect of an investigational product on childhood obesity. White and African American male and female subjects 10 to less than 14 years old who are overweight, obese or normal weight may be eligible. If a child qualifies to participate, he or she will receive the product or placebo and study related care at no cost. Compensation will be provided for time/travel.
