Study Break Lunch and Learn: Post-election grief and responses to societal stress
December 13, 12-1 p.m., HSC School of Nursing, K-wing room 2003; Free
Participants will learn the differentiation between grief and depression, their impacts, understanding how individuals are susceptible to depression, and key coping skills that can prevent depression. This lunch and learn is primarily for marginalized populations experiencing grief and stress. However, it is open to anyone who is experiencing these reactions. Free lunch provided for first 100 people to RSVP.

Optimal Aging Conference proposal submission deadline is Friday

The deadline for presentation proposals for the 2017 Optimal Aging Conference is Dec. 16. Are you passionate about a topic relating to the aging population? The UofL Institute for Sustainable Health & Optimal Aging and the Kentucky Association for Gerontology are welcoming all who have interest in the field of aging to submit a presentation proposal for the 2017 Optimal Aging Conference.

Black Lives Matter Statement of Support
December 16 deadline
To recognize Dec. 10, International Human Rights Day, Professor Enid Trucios-Haynes and Cate Fosl, directors of social justice institutes at UofL, issued a call to action for UofL employees to sign: “We as members of the UofL community support the Black Lives Matter movement and principles, and we endorse the Kent School of Social Work’s powerful position statement about the role of educators.” The full statement is available online. Faculty and staff can sign onto the statement by sending full name (and title or position (optional) ) [for identification purposes only] via email. Deadline is December 16. The statement will be presented to President Pinto and released to the press.

Mark Your Calendar: Blackboard will be offline during scheduled upgrade and cloud migration
Blackboard will be moving to the cloud in an effort to improve effectiveness and efficiency across the university. The move also promises to improve speed and response times while working within the Blackboard application. The upgrade will start on Friday, December 16 at 5 p.m. and run through Tuesday, December 20 at 8 p.m. and Blackboard will be unavailable during that time.

Studies
Women and men 18 years and older diagnosed with a benign lung nodule needed for research study

Hiram Rivas, MD, of the UofL Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonology and Nichola Garbett, PhD, of the UofL Department of Medicine, James Graham Brown Cancer Center are conducting a research study to see if a new technology can be used to accurately diagnose lung cancer and predict lung cancer recurrence from a blood sample. The study will compare blood samples from subjects with a benign lung nodule to those with lung cancer to find a marker in the blood that can reliably predict who does and who does not have lung cancer. Women and men 18 years or older who were previously diagnosed with a benign lung nodule may be eligible. Participants will be compensated in the amount of $50 for their time and/or inconvenience for providing a blood sample.

The Kosair Children’s Pediatric Clinical Research Unit (KCPCRU) is conducting a clinical trial looking at the safety and effectiveness of a potential new medicine to treat high blood pressure in children 6-<18 years of age. Eligible participants may be currently treated or untreated for hypertension and will be closely followed by University of Louisville physicians throughout the study. Participants will be compensated for their time and travel.

Childhood obesity in children 10 to less than 14 years old

The UofL Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical Research Unit at Norton Children’s Hospital is conducting a research study to evaluate the effect of an investigational product on childhood obesity. White and African American male and female subjects 10 to less than 14 years old who are overweight, obese or normal weight may be eligible. If a child qualifies to participate, he or she will receive the product or placebo and study related care at no cost. Compensation will be provided for time/travel.
