1.) University of Louisville Community Music Program presents Suzuki Steps Music Classes for Babies and Toddlers
9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. Jan. 4, Clifton Center, 2117 Payne St.
Free
These are demonstration music classes for babies age 0-3 and their parent. There is no charge. Using traditional nursery rhymes, action songs, lullabies and instruments, these classes seek to build on the child’s natural delight in learning and lay the foundation for musical skills such as beat, rhythm, pitch and tone. Through parent/child interaction and class participation, students start to acquire attributes of trust, sharing, success, and communication.

The YMCA and Get Healthy Now give UofL employees the gift of fitness over the winter break. To visit the Y, show your current UofL employee ID and a valid driver’s license. A spouse/qualifying adult, family member or out-of-town guest can join you for $5 per person, per day with picture ID. Remember, the GHN Wellness Center also will be open. Users will experience network outages of up to one hour as IT replaces equipment during the regular preventive maintenance period. Please note that other systems (e.g. Blackboard, email, instant messaging, PeopleSoft, ULink, data services, etc.) may be taken offline without notice. 6.) Spring Grant Writing Academy applications due Tuesday, Jan. 7
The Grant Writing Academy is designed to assist graduate students in developing knowledge and skills in grant writing. Sessions will be held on five Thursdays from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. in room 139 of the Shumaker Research Building. Graduate students, who are accepted into the academy, attend every session, and complete an academy grant application, will be entered into a drawing for a six-month dissertation fellowship, as well as have a milestone line for their transcript. 7.) Your vote could help earn $50,000 for UofL pediatric brain cancer research

Pediatric brain cancer specialist Ken Lucas, MD, and Kosair Children’s Hospital are up for a $50,000 Community Choice Grant from the TeamConnor Cancer Foundation. They’re in second place, but need a lot of help to catch up. Please vote today and every day through Dec. 27 to support Lucas’ brain cancer-killing vaccine. Join us for “Facilitating Discussions When the Wheels Come Off: Create, Maintain, and Mend a Safe Space with Your Students.” What is a good classroom discussion and what can you do to increase the likelihood that one will occur in your classes? And, what should you do when your well-intentioned discussion plan spins out of control? Join us for dinner as we discuss the strengths, challenges and share resources which promote discussion as a teaching tool.
