    Among UofL’s annual holiday traditions is the production of “Clara’s Dream,” an excerpt of the “Nutcracker” ballet. In its 19th year, the production features students from the elite level of the UofL Dance Academy. It is Dec. 5-7 at Comstock Concert Hall.

    UofL Cares

    1.) Last day to bid on silent auction for UofL Cares

    Dec. 1, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Strickler Hall, 310

    The last day to bid on one of the Department of Communication “Baskets of Hope” is today! The bidding will end at 3:00 p.m. All proceeds go to the UofL Cares campaign. Items include, but are not limited to, Texas Roadhouse dinner pass; Actors Theatre tickets; Louisville Orchestra tickets; and U of L t-shirts and hats.

    2.) Annual fire life safety inspection taking place during next several weeks

    The Kentucky state fire marshal’s office will be conducting its 2014 fire and life safety inspections at the Belknap, HSC and Shelbyhurst campuses over the next several weeks. Please survey your building and work areas to address any outstanding fire and life safety concerns. Buildings will be inspected randomly and no further notices will be published regarding these inspections. Thank you for your continued support of fire and life safety.

    3.) Annual ceramics sale is this week

    Dec. 5-6, Studio Arts building, 2314 S. Floyd St.

    The university’s annual ceramics sale will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the ceramics studio in the Studio Arts building, 2314 S. Floyd St. Shop for plates, mugs, bowls, vases, platters, functional pieces and decorative works. Proceeds benefit the UofL Hite Art Institute’s Ceramic Arts Organization and help fund student travel to art conferences and free public workshops with visiting artists.

    4.) Family Fun: Laser holiday party

    Dec. 6, 1 to 4 p.m., Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium

    $5 per person

    Holiday revelers have a blast at our annual family Laser Holidays party. Kids enjoy treats while playing holiday-themed games and the whole family jingles out to favorite holiday songs in our Laser Holidays music show. No free admits or coupons.

    5.) Enjoy a ‘Dr. Who’ Christmas

    Dec. 6, 9 p.m., Gheens Science Hall and Rauch Planetarium

    Free for UofL staff, faculty and students

    UofL Dr. Who fans can kick off the holiday season with a British invasion at the planetarium. The Dr. Who Christmas specials “The Christmas Invasion,” “The Runaway Bride” and “Voyage of the Damned” are the evening’s lineup. Open to UofL staff, faculty and students. Doors open at 8:45 p.m. No advance reservations.

    6.) Communication in English class scheduled

    Strickler Hall, Room 207

    The IESL program is offering an evening class Spring 2015 semester on Mondays from 7 to 9:45 p.m. beginning January 7. The class is designed to help non-native speakers of English (high-intermediate to advanced proficiency) become more effective communicators in academic, professional and social situations. Class instruction focuses on conversational fluency and strategies for professional interactions.

    7.) Health Sciences Center Celebrating Diversity newsletter is available

    The November/December 2014 edition of the Health Sciences Center Celebrating Diversity Newsletter is now available. Learn about the launch of the Perpectives of Excellence: A Multimedia Exploration of Institutional Diversity project and other exciting programs happening at the four HSC schools.

    8.) EVPRI hosts seminar on Ebola quarantines: science, ethics and policy

    Dec. 4, noon to 1 p.m., Kosair Charities Clinical and Translational Research Building, Room 101

    Mark A. Rothstein, JD, Herbert F. Boehl Chair of Law and Medicine, will provide a seminar on the efforts of public health officials to prevent the spread of Ebola, especially through the use of the highly controversial method of quarantine. This talk will review the history and science of quarantine, the relevant U.S. laws, the practical challenges of quarantine and the larger ethical issues raised by quarantine. Light refreshments will be provided.

    9.) Microbiology and Immunology defense

    The Department of Microbiology and Immunology Seminar Series presents a PhD defense, “Modulation of host polyubiquitination by the AnkB F-Box protein of Legionella pneumophila,” by Matt Bruckert, PhD candidate in the lab of Yousef Abu Kwaik, PhD.

    10.) English professor to discuss ‘What the Garden Said’

    Dec. 4, noon, University Club

    $14/person; $7/students

    Glynis Ridley, professor and chair of the Department of English, will give an illustrated talk on 18th century English landscape gardens as political propaganda. The fashion for visiting gardens dates back to the 1700s, when political satire spilled over from print culture into garden design. Ridley will discuss how to “read” some famous gardens of the period, including those of Stowe, the object of a garden tour made by Thomas Jefferson and John Adams in 1786.
